Ask in the engine conversion section.

Ya know you could just get a corvette if you want a nice v-8 powered two seater and leave the rotary where it belongs......in a RX-7

your quite right, and ls7 is from the new z06. but still never heard of a 1s6....
not to mention a ls6 and ls7 cost far more than a FC or running FD...

Valkyrie 10-29-06 05:48 PM

An LS7 SHORT BLOCK cost more than a clean FD, much less a fully complete LS7 engine.

Impure7 10-29-06 08:53 PM

ya i priced one out a complete longblock with everything it was like 13000 grand thats a little much for my budget.

You know, it's this kind of stupidity that frustrates me about this forum.

If people left cars alone, not swapping motors, etc, then there would be no hot rodding, no modified cars, nothing.

Shut the fuck up about "leave the rotary in there." It's just a fucking engine. The RX-7 is just another car. Sure, you can think that's sacrilege, but I don't give a rat's ass. It has four wheels and two seats, it's just a car. Pistons, rotary, it doesn't matter, as long as it runs, drives, and is enjoyed by it's owner. Any mods are good mods, because it gets people thinking and leads to the next set of ideas, the next set of mods, the next increase in performance.

^ Amen to that.

Amen to everything stated in the first post.

Some people seem to think RX-7's suck with other engines in them. Those people are obviously idiots though.

If they were smart, they'd realize the advantage of having such a good chassis wrapped around a particular engine. I mean, what's better than having your favorite engine hot rodded and dropped into an awesome FC or FD chassis?

I just can't believe the way some people sell these cars so short, like the engine is what makes them awesome. The engine is really the smallest part of the equation.

I have a V8 in my FD...planning on putting another V8 in my g/f's car soon...

I've caught alot of hell form my rotary friends, but everyone who has taken a ride in my car (and the select few who have gotten to drive it) LOVE IT!!! The rotary is a neat engine, i'll eventually save up the money to build and maintain one, but for now, i'm a college bum, so i need cheaper thrills :) and the neck snapping torque is fun.

As one rotary lover told me at a meet - "Tray, I can't hate you too much, sure u put a different engine in the car, but you still love RX-7s..." and its true, i do love them, they are great cars...

as for the purchasing of LSx motors....talk to ur local GM Dealership (Chevy, Pontiac), they can order you one...i was picking up a part for my car when a guy was paying for a LS2 for a project of his...i think it was like 6k for a short block

LS1 - 350ci 285 hp (i think) (98-02 F-bodies/97-04 base corvettes/first year of new GTO)
LS2 - 400ci ??? hp (05 base corvette/05 GTO)
LS6 - 350ci 405 hp (C5 Z06 corvette)
LS7 - 427ci 505 hp (C6 Z06 corvette)

Rotary Noob 10-31-06 11:29 PM

And the Driver is the biggest. Doesnt matter what the car is if you cant control it.

Rotary Noob 11-02-06 05:12 AM

the LS6 is the motor used in the C5 Z06. (2002+) In 2001, they had the LS1, which was 20 horsepower less because of the valve train. (at least thats what ive gathered on it so far. I could be wrong, feel free to correct me if i am) There isnt much of a difference between the two, though ive heard people say that they can "feel it". You have 400 horse power, of course you can feel it. The LS7 is a beast of a motor. It can wind up to 7000 RPM and produces 500 hp. Not bad. Course the price tag is freakin huge. Like you already stated.

Your engine list is almost correct.
LS1- 350 hp Similar to the LT1, which came with either (and i could be wrong) 325, or 340 hp. The years were right though.

The version of the LS1 in the Z06 vette (2001) was 385hp with 385 ftlbs.

$100T2, dude. Nail on the head man. I know ive said a rotary is what makes the RX the RX, which is true in that its the OEM engine. I agree whole heartedly, your car, your money, your ride. Do whatever you damn well please, just make sure YOU have fun with it. If i had the money, i would be getting some machined rotor housings, machined rotors, and pimping that bad boy out with upwards of 30psi. I want it to be nucking futs. I dont have the money though, so im SOL for the moment.

LS series motors, or even LT motors for that matter, are going to be damn expensive for even a short block, like you said. Look for pricetags on a longblock from 4k(LT-1 i believe)-20k(LS7 area) Hope this helps you.

(note, the LT-1 is almost the same as the LS-1 for less money. If you want to convert still, might try checking out a motor at a pick a part type salvage yard. Might be able to find a decent one in a camaro for 300 bucks.)

Black91n/a 11-02-06 11:59 AM

A lot of people get full package they need to do the swap (engine, ECU, tranny, etc) for $2k-$4k for an LS1. LS2's and LS6's will cost more, the cost of an LS7 longblock is about $14k IIRC. It's a lot less expensive than you think. The disadvatage of the LT1 is that it weighs more, due to the iron block.

Ummm, sure. If by "the same" you mean "completely different."

The LT1 shares almost all it's dimensions with the old SBC's. The LS1 shares bore spacing only. The LS1 started off where the LT1 was just finishing up at (meaning, you can't get a stock LT1 with more than 305 hp, which is 20 less than the least powerful stock LS1). The LS1 was a complete redesign of the SBC.

I'm not trying to argue that the LT1 isn't a good engine, but to call it "almost the same" as the LS1 just goes to show that you know nothing about these engines.

Yes, you are wrong. The 96/97 SS/WS6 LT1 had 305 hp.

I'm fairly new here and I have to chime in. To me, the rotary engine is like communism. Intriguing in theory, disaster in practice. I'm starting my second American "iron" (actually, aluminum) into Japanese car swap. The first was a Datsun 280Z with a twin turbo 383 Chevy. In the Datsun world, I caught hell from purists, but there isn't a single inline six driver that can outrun me. My car weighs the same and has better weight distribution and polar moment of inertia. So, faster, handles better, my response to those who say I have committed sacrilege is :fawk: .

While I was in the shop creating this beast, I came upon a 93 FD that was headed for the crusher despite having only mild damage. I rebuilt it and loved the twin turbo rotary. Only one problem. It was the worst part of the car, even though I have had almost zero reliability problems. I consider the chassis to be arguably the best platform ever built for the street. In superstock autocross, I was being beaten by lesser drivers in Z06's. The LSX series of motors soon became my favorite. The amount of power that was possible with minimal mods was amazing.

So...it became a natural process. If I wanted to improve my favorite chassis, I could make it very uncivil and pump up the rotary. Not a very good option. To have any chance of getting the power that I will get out of my mildly warmed over 427 LSX, I would have to go to a very unstreetable single turbo, and there would be nowhere near the fuel mileage or reliability, and the road racing manners would be gone-it would essentially be a drag car. I will have better driveability, fuel mileage, and be able to drive it all day, every day without worry. With my wet sumped LS7, I will use LS7 heads and a moderate grind cam. Projected HP will be about 608. Any rotards want to race for cash or your car?

So why not buy an F Body or Vette? The F body comes in at nearly 4000 pounds and the Vette still weighs 600 pounds more than an RX7 with a V8 (which has been documented over and over again to have the same weight, better weight distribution, and lower center or gravity as compared to a rotary FD). It's all about improving upon what's out there, taking what I consider to be one of the best engines with one of the best chassis's ever built. It's probably one of the best hybrids out there, far better than my Z hybrid which had to have nearly every system on it improved to match the engine. I have been hotrodding for longer than many of you have been alive, and I suspect most those who object to swapping out the rotary have never turned a wrench.

Black91n/a 11-12-06 02:05 AM

Why on Earth would you wet sump the LS7? Lots of people spend a lot of time, money and effort to get a dry sump and you're going the other way?
