700 v 200
Congrats to all w V8 muscles in their Rx! I wanted to know if anyone can chime in on pros/cons w a 700r4 vs 200r4 tranny...anyone with experience on the performance diff of them. I got a 200 now, but shop guy said I should think about gettin 700 since I'm running over 400hp & torque...probably bumping up to 500's in future. Thanks

As far as i know 700 is based off a turbo 400 and 200 off a 350 . Also the 700 has a very steep first gear which is great for a heavy car but not so good in a light car . Also from what i have heard there are more parts available now for the 200 . Depending on the power level i would stick with the 200 . Maybe not as strong as the 700 but it has a better 1st gear and you car is lighter than most gm vehicle by at least 500lbs which means it should be able to take more power. Plus the lower diff gearing helps aswell . But maybe not the diff ;) .

700r4 is not based on a turbo 400, the 4L80e is however. 2004r is based on the old TH200.
I've owned stock and built 700r4 and 2004r transmissions. If the 2004r is not a Grand National transmission, forget it. I had a warmed over Grand National transmission behind my turbo LS1 and it lived up to about 550 RWHP, at which point it went up in smoke. A non-GN one will tolerate half that. 700r4 with a shift kit will handle 350 RWHP. Put a beast sunshell, alto clutches/kolene steels and a good apply band it can do 450-500 RWHP. Either one needs proper TV cable setup or you will kill it with a quickness. The only TII diff you will find is 4.10 gears. Non TII had 3.90, 4.10 and 4.33. There are unicorn 3.90 TII gearsets from Japanese automatic TIIs, but I don't know if anyone has ever even proven they exist. |
Not sure how to tell the difference between the two diffs , i have a a first gen rx and a 8.8 diff . Iam sure with a auto the second gen would take alot more power than the first gen . As far as building the 200 i would think 400 horsepower with a quality rebuild and shift kit . The saving grace is the weight of the car and the lower gears . Heat and load is what kills autos . Not sure how much power your looking to make 450 to 500 horsepower normally requires a quality converter and tranny parts 2-3000 bucks plus the converter . Under 400 you really wouldn't need a stall or at least anything over 2400 rpm .

Right now my motor is a LT1 w alum heads, big cam- I've read a lot online about 200 that can handle up to 750-1000hp, the shop guy said the 200 is good on turbo GN due to lower torque. And not say that many of those adds don't live up to the hype. That's why I want someone who has used the trans before to educate me.
I'm looking to get a trans that in few years will allow me to add supercharger & possible meth injection. I want to avoid computer controlled trans so not to have to swap comp on engine & least mod. |

750-1000 hp is gonna cost some cake to live for any trans . My buddy has a 1200 hp f1 procharged sbc with some parts supplied my Steve Morris , who builds 3000hp street cars at least the engines . He has a rosler t 400 4000$ converter 1500$

Check out PA transmissions , i can vouch for them . Co worker ran a c-4 in the 9s with a 8000rpm 347 with trans brake . They kept taking out transmissions before they went to PA . They also run For points It just say something about there quality . As far as 200r4 they are the same size as as t 350s thats were i got confused . :/
