302 swap into RX-7

Took the heart out of "Sheila"" last night... Getting the 302 honed and prepped for install... Any helpful hints accepted...

put the rotary back in..
jk you call like both motors |
Not really mine, and the rotary took a poo + 302 was readily available...
|
Good rods and heads and you get the best of both worlds v/8 sound rotary revs ;)

here's my tip, keep the engine as far right as possible! The steering box interfering with the headers was a major pita for me, a quarter inch can be the difference between breezing through or buying a couple different sets of headers to beat up with a hammer.

i used shorties and they work fine.. clearance was only an issue when i ran long tubes.. and thats cause the guy ran butchered long tubes

I put a 302 in my FB, and the only issue I had was the cooling. No problem when I was moving, only when I got stuck in traffic on a hot day and sat idling. After several different fans and clutch arrangements, I used a stock RX-7 plastic fan, but with no clutch - just direct drive. That would eat some horsepower if you were racing at LeMans, but I rarely went over 4500 rpm, so it just didn't matter. It solved my cooling problem.
We used a set of Hedman headers, and my exhaust guy turned the collector so he could run a crossover behind the torque converter into a Y and then a 3 inch system to the back. Not familiar with the FC, but there is not room for duals on a FB unless you are willing to give up some ground clearance. |
Lots of room for duals. The 13b road race set up is dual until just before the muffler. Trick for true dual on a v8 is a dual in/dual out single magnaflow in the stock location.

No chance the Coyote could fit in the FD? I'm not a fan of the LS swap, but it's a weight saver compared to the old 302.
|
with a proper suspension the weight difference wont matter

Any updates? How is the project coming along?
