1979 RX7 sbc 350 conversion??

Well, ive just about decided if i dont get this damn motor running right, Itd be neat to put a 350 in it, its not what i want to do.... Id like to just get it running right, but i know nothing about a rotary engine. I am pretty sure its just my carb but anyhow, has anyone put a 350 in a 79-85? how hard is it? just curious... thanks..

blackdeath647 12-14-08 08:47 PM

oh man you're gonna get crapped on lol, i'm gonna say it DON'T DO IT....and yes tons of people have put 350's in it.:icon_no2: :tear:

Rotary Powah 12-14-08 08:51 PM

Don't. If you put a v8 in it, it completely ruins the point. It makes me sad when people put v8's in rx-7s. Especially 1st gens.

If you want to put a v8 in something, get a 240z/260z/280z and put one in that. That would be really cool.

DivinDriver 12-14-08 08:53 PM

Patience is not your thing, is it?

You been working on this near-30-year-old motor for how many days now, and already you're ready to bastardize it...

Why don't you just get an old Camaro, if you're so hot for something to put a 350 in?

boricua74rx7 12-14-08 08:56 PM

if you are going to put a350 in rx7 sell it,and buy a GM(generic made).there's no piston motor that will give you more hp per rpm than a winkle.

Jeezus 12-14-08 09:15 PM

I don't think anyone has put a 350 in a RX-7 before.

sarcasm?...:Wconfused

when i first got my FB and i still thought it had pistons (yeah don't ask lol) i took it to one of my friends dad who was a mechanic to see what he could tell me about it and exact quote no lie "...i remember when those came out, you could rev the shit out of them until they popped...yup only way to fix those damn things is to put a 350 in 'em.....me and a buddy did that about damn 20 yrs ago." blah blah blah....

Seriously, don't do it!

Not sure what problems you are battling with this car, but there is NOTHING that is so severe to warrant assaulting her that way. Have you had the pleasure of driving a well-tuned RX-7? If not, then you don't know what you're missing!

Take the time to get to know her first... she'll warm up to you if you put in the effort!

Starfox07 12-14-08 10:17 PM

Fix it. If its a 12a, it should be a piece of cake to get it running really well. Just read the FAQ, these motors are way easier than people are led to believe. Just don't be a heretic and put a V8 in it. There's a good chance you will burn for eternity if you do.

kcscott11 12-14-08 10:30 PM

haha it was pretty much just an idea, i had already told my wife i wasnt going to do that. the motor runs perfect at one point, and like crap the next. i know its something small. I just cant help but think about the 350 sitting in my garage :-) but i already have the trans am with a 350 in it so ill be good. I really do like the car how it is, I just gotta put some effort into it. I can only get good time to work on it on the weekends. This weekend im going to dump the gas out and put new gas, clean my brand new spark plugs because they are already fouled, atf it. Maybe examine the carb closer... etc. im going to get it running right by golly!

KaoticFdR1 12-15-08 12:35 AM

DO IT!...it's a fun ride

*i'm gonna venture to say that this thread was moved from 1st gen section*

vxturboxv 12-15-08 08:33 AM

U got the right idea. I'd go with a SBF though.(302 out of a mousetang,cougar,t-bird etc) The kit is cheaper and they have a nicer "fit". Getting a wrecked donar car is the way to go. Even the cheap auto's hold up to power with the light weight of the RX. They are a blast!

Go to grannysspeedshop.com and buy a kit.

But Beware! They take forever!

Die scumbag. Put what you want in it, its just a fucking car. You kids and wanna
be rotary purists need to get off your high horse and realize that rotaries are just one
of many ways to make power. With a few bolt ons (including price of swap) on my 1JZ
I'm sitting at 320rwhp and 310 foot pounds of torque, under 4000 USD, 4k to you is a
new engine, and maybe upgraded injectors. HP numbers for you at the same price? lol.

I'm on 13 engines and 8 cars, I speak from experience.

Dude don't let the rotards turn you away, the best seven I've had (power
numbers, drivability, gas mileage, and dependability) doesn't have a rotary in it.

go for it... they are fun. I HIGHLY suggest going LS1 NOT carbed.

the rest of you are a bunch of typical rotards...

No need to be a douche.

You are wrong on a lot of that too.
A new engine isn't $4000, try about $1500, and that's with a turbo, intercooler, and wiring harness. Look it up on JDM motors.
$1000 is only a set of heads for a v8.

And if you hate rotaries so much (guessing you don't know much about them at all by your comments) Then why the hell are you on a rotary forum? And why buy an rx7? Just go buy a supra or somethin, shithead.

datsun1200 12-18-08 06:10 PM

I know people that kill v8's with rotary's.And all thay have is a 750 holly with a 12abp,that car in my sig..Please.The money that your going to spend on a v8 swap,Just go with a ported 13b...

vxturboxv 12-19-08 06:09 AM

Why does this always turn into a pissing match between rotary and pistons? This is the other conversions section. Don't the diehard rotards have anything better to do? Stay out of this section and we'll stay out of yours!

With that being said. I can buy a SBF 302 from local engine shops all refreshed new bearings rings etc. Ready to go for 600 bucks with a core. This includes heads. and a cam of my choice at cost. (80bucks). So for 680 dollars I can have a NA 275 hp 325tq motor. that is goign to last approx 100k+ miles. Not to mention with headers and some mild port work intake and carb 300 hp and 350 tq is cake.

For straight line performance and street/strip setup dollar for dollar I'll take a v8 over a TII swap any day...

For one the name of this forum is Rx7club not Rotary club or rotary forum or NoPistons. Remember that noob.

Now that we have that cleared up...the JDM motors aren't anything i'd ever mess with (and if i did...not w/o a rebuild) When i rebuilt my rotary and had it race ported (really big street port for the noob) I spent $3k on all new parts (everything except irons/housings/rotors) I didn't skimp out either. I got the good stuff. And that engine ran like a beast (still tuned for a stock port so i just fattened up the fuel and ran it on the rich side till i could have it retuned) then i got to go for a ride in a stock ls1 fd and decided to ditch the rotary and haven't looked back.

If he wants to do the swap then by all means man it's your car. Do with it what you want.

On i side note....i do plan on building another rotary car. But it won't be an FD chassis.

Rotary Powah 12-19-08 01:52 PM

Ok, fine.... but if you guys are ever just going to get rid of a rotary engine, 12a or 13b, by all means, give it to me. I'll gladly take them :D

ddaves79rx 01-03-09 11:34 AM

Just my .02. I have a 79 rx with a 350/T5 combo. Grannys basic kit will get the engine in the car without any cutting on the car body. I am not going to say it doesn't take alot of effort to get the car together. The exhaust is tight, the distributor barely clears, the radiator has no clearance for a fan and the carb to hood clearance is tight. I did my conversion totally low budget. And bang for the buck it was worth it. I found the rotary was going to cost too much to rebuild. I already know the rotary guys hate this kind of post and I am sure to get flamed. But, oh well......
