S5 n/a with a few bolt-ons
I got the 6PI working again in my '90 GXL. While I had the LIM off, I installed the Pineapple Racing 6-port sleeve inserts. The engine is stock and I still run the factory; fan, p/s, a/c and air pump. I have installed a professional racing shop custom fabricated CAI off a friend's parted out SCCA Pro Solo II car. The exhaust consists of a CorkSport header with a Catco main cat and a Borla cat back system.
I had her on a Mustang dyno this morning and she made; 146 rwHP @ 7100 RPM with 111 ft-lbs of torque @ 6250 RPM Remember that numbers off a Mustang dyno are about 13% lower than a DynoJet, so that would work out to about: 165 rwHP and 125 ft-lbs of torque I have not yet installed the Rtek 2.0 with the wide band O2, so there maybe something left in the tune. Other than a bit too raspy and noisy exhaust note, I am very happy with the results. |
Nice. How many miles on the engine?
From what I've read you'll probably see the most gains from that rtek + tuning - do post the results! |
Thanks.
The engine is a blue tag Mazda rebuilt. The PO had it installed at the dealership in Aug 2000. I have all the paperwork. It has 31K miles on it since then. |
That's a very decent amount of power..even the 146 is pretty impressive
|
Very impressive for an NA.

Very good! My red car has: S4 intake [hot air intake - cone filter unboxed], Pineapple sleeve inserts, S5 rotors, S4 plates [stock ports], FD housings, RB header/presilencer/catback, and made 157RWHP on a dynojet, ~165K mi on the plates, ~81K on the housings and ~4K on atkins apex seals during the test.
*for comparison. Tune should help, as well as removing the cat.... But I'd never do that on a street car... ;) |
Once I clean my aux ports, get sleeves I would love to make those kind of numbers. I'm still on the stock/original block with 60k miles.

Interior looks mint too. I have a massive pull/surge at 5500rpm. Similar to a vtec feeling I got in my Civic. I made a thread about it and people told me to check my aux ports and I can only move one of them, the other is stuck. Once I free those up, I should gain a lot more power down low. My car feels old though, which is odd. I want to replace all the bushings, get coilovers, replace brakes. I feel like the car will feel more alive once I replace all the old/original stuff. The car was only driven something like 2,000kms in 3 years, so everythings aged.

i think the "surge" is just the feeling every rx7 owner gets when up in the rpm's.. that's just where our power is.. i love it too :icon_tup:

Ryan2949>> You have an S5.. It was always VERY noticeable on my S5 'vert. I wouldn't worry about it. :D

I know, but right at 5500 it's a whole new level. Most people say it shouldn't be that noticeable.

Sweet numbers! How hard was it to put this sleeves in? I bet if you got an E-Fan, took off the AC and underdrive alternator pulley you would put down close to 175 at the wheel.
I wonder what I'm putting down, I'm all stock with an autoparts store custom intake and a straight pipe from the manifold to a cherry bomb... |
Thanks. I had to take the intake apart anyways due to the 6 port sleeves being carbon locked. For me personally it was not too difficult, but have had a lot of project cars over the years - although this is the first RX7 that I have wrenched on.
I now have the E-fan hooked up; https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generati...hroud-1028539/ But I will be keeping the A/C and PS. The big thing would be to finally install the Rtek7 2.0 and the WB O2 and get the maps dialed in better. |
