Dyno of my 381rwhp Turbo Convertible, tuned by Steve Kan
 
I took my TurboVert to the Steve Kan tuning session in the St. Louis area on June 6 & 7th. I was able to start the car and have it idling rough with the Power FC installed. I had last driven/ started the car 14 months ago on the stock turbo with light mods. It is a Series 4 engine with 139,000 miles, and one previous rebuild at an unknown mileage. It compression tests at 101psi on each rotor currently. I was hoping to put down 330rwhp under 16psi on my local 92 octane. The new mods include:

Apexi Power FC installed w/ Banzai Kit
Garrett T04E .60 cold/ .84 hot
HKS manifold & HKS standard 40mm wastegate, dumped externally
Procharger Intercooler converted to Water-Air cooling w/ Heat exchanger (no reservoir or ice)
880/1680 injectors
4x NGK BUR9EQ spark plugs
Greddy Profec B boost controller
Motoria Y-pipe & mufflers (already had) to a new custom 80mm downpipe/ testpipe
Blitz BOV (already had)
Walbro 255 (already had)

After working out the minor issues, I thought I might get to see my car do a pull the 1st evening. Unfortunately, the HKS standard wastegate isn't a good choice for a rotary. Boost was creeping up over 15psi super-quick. Steve and I messed with the dipswitches on the boost controller, and even changed the wastegate actuator's pressure source from the manifold to a new nipple on the intercooler piping between the turbo and the core. We hoped that the higher pressure before the pressure-drop in the intercooler core would open the gate a little sooner, but it really didn't help at all. Steve said even if I was on 94 octane pump gas, he wasn't comfortable tuning my high mileage motor at this boost level. He said it would be a different story if I was on E85. He also said I already made 305 rwhp when he let off at 5000rpm's on the pump gas. I have three local E85 stations, so I wasn't opposed to the idea of converting. It was something I had actually first thought about a few days before the tune. So I went ahead and drained out all my gas that night and filled up with E85 the next morning. Here is the results:

Sorry if it's hard to read. I had to dick around with resizing it for 25 minutes just to be able to post it. Also, I traced the RPM marks in on the top section, since the sheet I have showing RPM's instead of MPH also showed AFR's instead of Torque.
Max RWHP - 381.42
Max RWTQ - 319.68
Max Boost - 18.57psi

Peak power appears around 6500rpm, peak torque around 5750rpm. The car is basically tuned for the boost creep it was experiencing, but bearing that in mind you can see I hit 15psi where my gate opens before 4000rpms. I thought that was decent for a non-ball bearing, oil-cooled only turbo. Steve said I was just starting to break up in the high rpm's. He said with colder plugs and an MSD to replace the primary coil pack, I could turn up the boost. Inj duty cycle is 85% currently. Driving the car for a few weeks since then, I monitored my IAT's closely to see how this liquid-to-air setup works. The hottest day I drove the car around I saw a high temp of 50c, the coolest day I saw 37c. Seems to work great. I will rebuild the motor beofre I push it any further, but have to say I'm very happy for now. Considering my car (before the turbo swap) was the fastest car I ever drove, I'm not quite done being scared of it yet anyways :gwink:

Thanks guys. Unfortunately the rebuild is coming sooner than later, as I cracked my rear iron in the usual S4 weak spot by the oil filter this week. The car was pushing coolant under boost a little bit as it was, so I knew a coolant seal (or retaining jacket for the seal) was already compromised. I already have a replacement S5 rear iron, so now it's time to learn how to rebuild a motor. I actually feel better getting that first blown engine out of the way :) 400rwhp, here I come....

EEeEEEeeeee... The cracking of the rear iron is like a lession everyone has to go through. I had my fair share. Good numbers! I would be happy right at 400rwhp. I need to see Steve soon. :D

Here are a couple pics from my phone. I snapped these after the iron broke and was spraying oil everywhere, so pardon the mess.
