Drag racing an S4 n/a in the 1/4 mile

Okay, guys. I know a lot of us like throwing around numbers as to what our car could do, how much power we make, etc.... Here is some hard evidence of what a s4 n/a is capable of in the quarter mile.

I raced at National Trails raceway in Central Ohio yesterday. This was my first time on a drag strip, so obviously my driving was not great. My engine was professionally rebuilt by Ken Carswell of Rotary Connection in Pataskala, OH 13,000 miles ago, so this is effectively a new FC

Mods:
17x7 Enkei OR-52 wheels, 235 tires out back and 215 up front. Tires are usable, but worn
Catalytics removed, Borla catback
Stock ports (not a mod, but it's relevant)
generic cone filter in cold air box, fed by vented headlight cover

Time slips to come in my next post.

i haz a timeslip

The left slip is my test run. I ran:
r/t-------------.985
60'------------3.016
330-----------8.197
1/8-----------12.304@60.98
1000---------15.862
1/4-----------18.805@77.21

The right slip is my first and only bracket race of the evening. I was staged against a 2nd generation Integra.
I was in the left lane.
Figure-------------FC-----------------------Integra
Dial---------------17.80--------------------14.10
r/t-----------------.371---------------------.151
60'----------------2.506--------------------2.110
330---------------7.408--------------------5.890
1/8---------------11.368@60.87---------8.995@79.03
1000-------------14.832------------------11.687
1/4---------------17.694@79.37---------14.084@90.42

The guy in the Integra won. We both broke out, but his was less severe than mine... I'd actually considered dialining in at 17.6, but was advised against dialing that low by a friend's uncle who's much more familiar with drag racing. Hopefully you guys can find this information useful! :)

I bet with practice you should be able to get your time down. Practice makes perfect. I've always raced on a 1/8 mile, but I haven't had the chance yet to race on a 1/4 mile.

TehMonkay 06-13-08 12:10 AM

header and engine management, ignition last

only thing that will make you go faster

na FCs were not mean for the 1/4 mile

glhs0867 06-13-08 07:26 AM

Is your car a automatic?

I can't see a modded 5 speed FC n/a pull anything less than a high 14's.

YaNi 06-13-08 02:27 PM

My bone stock S5 N/A ran a 16.0 before I began restoring it. That was with NO launch because of mad wheel hop associated with 17 year old suspension and tires.

Yeah, I think it's pretty safe to say I'll run sixteens when I get some more practice in...

Nah, I'll probably supercharge eventually... not looking to get into this too seriously, though. The car is more for fun than racing, and if I was to get into racing, I'd hit the circuit.

And true, our cars are NOT for drag racing.

Nope, it's a 5-speed. You clearly don't know what you're talking about, as auto magazines that tested the car new said it ran a 16.5 quarter mile stock. That's with everything absolutely brand new, and a professional driver behind the wheel. I'm not a professional driver, and my car has many new parts but still definitely has some drivetrain loss that's associated with a used car.

Stock turbos would run 14s. The only guy I know of who's run 14s in a non-turbo was Tech Greek, and he had a Camden blower on his car.

Doubtful. Professional drivers only ever saw a 16.5 in your car when it was bone stock. Show me the time slip to prove it, and I will eat my words.

TripGreeley 06-13-08 06:49 PM

My NA is way faster than that. Sounds like either your car is beat or you just need alot of help driving. No integra will ever smoke me unless it's turbo. Buy some track tires. It will change the world. I really feel you are insulting NA FC's.

MmSadda 06-13-08 07:30 PM

It was a 14-second Integra; Of course it was turbocharged. Do you think that stock Integras run 14s? Even if you do, do you believe a 2nd gen Integra stock runs 14s? Maybe you've been watching too much F&F? Short of turboing, an Integra will never run that fast without a very aggressive cam, as well as boring and stroking and probably some nice tires, too. By the way, he was on drag tires.

As for my driving, I was trying not to be too hard on the car, as I use it as a daily driver. So, my driving was definitely not as great as it could have been, but was not awful by any means. Furthermore, it was my first time at the track. I only posted this so that the n/a FC owners who claim they run 15s could have a better frame of reference as to what a non-professional driver will do on a track if they've never tried before.

As for my driving being bad, and me insulting n/a FCs, you can go eat a bag of dicks.
http://www.eatabagofdicks.com/bag.gif

If you want to get all bent out of shape about my driving insulting your car, post your time slip proving how fast you run, and list your mods. Have you ever even been to a real strip?

What are you trying to race it for then?

By the way buddy, you have a N/A Rotary and you're way past the break in time. Change the oil every 3k and Its actually good to redline it on a daily basis.
You have to beat on the N/A to get it to go anywhere.
I had an 87 base model on the stock motor with 198K, it chirped 2nd like a champ and ran rock solid, no smoke or anything. I redlined it almost daily, and it had been through a few bottles of nitrous. The car held up because it was redlined frequently and I was up on my fluid changes. I traded it in on a VW.
Proper maintenance is what makes the engine last, definately not going easy on it. If you go easy on it you'll build up more carbon in the engine and possibly gunk up the seals- eventually having one get stuck and losing compresssion.

I think most N/A guys around here redline frequently. If you think its a stupid idea, do a search. you'll find plenty of info.

RX7_RaVeN 06-13-08 09:06 PM

I have an 86 GXL and when I drive it I ramp on it pretty hard. But not until it is wormed up. It still runs strong and I've never had any real problems with it besides a flooding every once in awhile. Keep the oil levels up and drive the car like is supposed to be driven.

A friend called me up and asked me to go to the track with her... It was only $15 to race, so I figured it'd be fun. So I was racing it for fun.

I was revving to redline, but my tranny and differential would be what I'm afraid of breaking, so I was trying to shift pretty easy. I see redline on a pretty reasonable basis; Like I said, I'm more worried about my tranny or differential going than blowing the engine. When I say going easy on it, I just mean at the shifts.

I do, but there's a difference between redlining a car that's meant for it, and trying to powershift a creampuff of a transmission.

Mike0071 06-13-08 11:57 PM

Why would you be downshifting during a drag?
Bro, these cars NA do high 15's low 16's, so something's wrong with your car, or your driving.

Here's proof: https://www.rx7club.com/time-slips-dyno-128/first-time-track-15-7-%40-88mph-s5-n-762959/

Easily one of the most amazing posts ever.

And I am sure I could find PLENTY of Integra's (2nd Gen Specifically) that can smoke your 17+ year old japanese car.

Collin, like I said before, I give you respect for actually racing your FC at the track and not being an armchair engineer.

And apparently people fail at reading comprehension. ^Point proven above.

J-Rat 06-14-08 12:12 AM

If anyone bothered to look at the incrementals, you would notice the big 3 second 60 foot which would indicate either a monumental spin, or a nice easy launch. Either way that would equate to an approximate loss of 2 seconds on the top end which would put his performance numbers about it line.

Need to get that 60 foot down to around 2.0.

john ward 06-14-08 12:31 AM

national trail raceway is fun. used to go there there with my 383 c10

mario1386 06-14-08 12:51 AM

well in my s4 i ran a 16.2 it has like 183xxx miles orginal motor and yes the compression is still good but my mods are;
cone filter
pacesetter header
obx 3' exhaust
racing beat clutch
turbo2 rear end
suspenion full coilover setup
solid diff mounts and subframe mounts(no more wheel hop)
and all syntectic fuilds

Ugh. And another person who fails at reading comprehension. This was the first time the OP had been to the track. Also, synthetic fluids are not modifications.

Here's my list of mods or upgrades or magic fasty thingies, hope it makes you happy. As for the bag of dicks- I looked high and low for them and everywhere I went they said your mom just bought them clean out.

Actually BlowMe RTR 89' bought all the bags of dicks to throw at his girlfriend and her lover.

SO TripGreeley, your car is not stock! You're faster, NO SHIT!

This was a comparison for STOCK N/A's!

Also, pics (timeslip) or it didn't happen!

I said "powershifting"; who the fuck said a thing about downshifting before you?

And that guy honestly has a better exhaust system than me, and as the second post says, he's running WELL under stock times. I also am in need of a tune up right now.
