90 TII mildly modded dyno numbers.......

Today was just to damn hot here in Fresno, California. 101 deg. F was the temperature. Well, I was really dissapointed in the hp #s but I was ok with the TQ #s. I managed to run Peak Hp of 209.1, and peak Tq of 196.8 on the first run. As some of you may know, my turbo has been smokin after some hard racing and it wasnt even any leak(or at least I cant find one and not even the top oil feed line). I don't know if its the turbo or just my motor which gets 102psi on both rotors. Well, I guess I did alright for a used JDM engine and used jdm turbo. I should be doing more though. Oh yea, my mods are listed below except it was at 9psi and jumped to 10psi for about 500rpm and then dropped back to 9 before it dropped to 7 around 6k. Turbo didnt smoke after the 2 dyno pulls, but did have a oil burning smell. Well, I guess for now I will get my turbo rebuilt with maybe bnr stage 1 and figure things out from there. if the numbers are not much difference with the bnr stage 1, then i will rebuild it right away. Also it is not really tuned. I have connected the HKS GCC or 720cc injectors yet, and i am still running the fuel pump straight to the battery so im always getting 12v which is a little rich in the mid-rpms and especially on idle. i get about 14-15 mpg and its 90% freeway for me. Tell me what you guys think. And please don't talk 2 much shit, because I know the #s aren't that great. btw, my friend pulled 214.7 hp and 189.5 tq with same mods but greddy catback and at 8 psi. he spiked twice and hit fuel cut too.
and this is on a Dynojet 248

after surfing the net and looking at other peoples dynos on used jdm or usdm engines around 60k and up with the same mods, I realize my numbers are pretty close to theres. I guess I just need a rebuild. The car runs good and always starts up everyday and night. I guess right now is the perfect time to rebuild. I'll probably get the BNR Hybrid Stage 1 first around the end of the year or beginning of next year, and then next summer, I will rebuild the engine, but probably keep it stockport.

There's no reason to rebuild it IMO. Those numbers seem normal for a super hot day, running the TMIC (with no ice I assume) and running an untuned 9psi... :dunno:

I could see an easy 230whp+ on a cool day, with an iced TMIC and 12-14psi... Maybe throw in a 3" TID for good measure. Also, if you port your WG a little more aggressively, you could more safely up the boost into the 12+psi range without having to worry about a 15psi spike (or whatever).

eriksseven 09-03-06 12:22 AM

Also, if you rebuilt it, why would you want to keep the stock ports? :suspect: lol

No ice. Only a fan that worked alright. Yea, I know I probably could get 230whp on a 12psi tune, but if I had it rebuilt, I could maybe get 250whp. I know it would be best to rebuild it while it is still in pretty good condition. its not like i have perfect compression numbers either. i get only 102psi in each rotor. my friend sees 115-120.
My friend pulled 214hp with the same mods on 8psi although he hit fuel cut from boost spiking. i did get more torque than him though, i had 196.8, and he had 186.5
With my car though, I have never experienced boost spiking or boost creep. when i installed my rb exhaust i got 8psi. So you really think my numbers are normal though? I was hoping for 220 at least. 209 seems pretty low.

because I will be doing the rebuild, and feel stockport should be good enough for my hp goals. look at j-rat, i believe he is s4 with 434hp stockports. I'm looking for around 300+ whp by next summer with bnr hybrid stage 1 at 15psi and a rebuild. and whenever the time comes 400+ whp range in the further future.

Sure, stock ports will let you get to your needs, but a streetport will help you reach them THAT much easier. There will be less stress on the engine, also, as you'll need less boost to achieve the same HP with a streetport. 300rwhp on a streetport is CAKE.

i thought streetporting increases the wear and makes it less reliable? I know there is downfalls to both stockport and streetport. And I have no experience porting an engine. The rebuild, I know I can do, but porting, I rather take it one step at a time. I am still learning and going to school for auto mechanics. I might do a streetport on the second rebuild or on another TII.

I think there are virtually no negative side-effects to porting your engine... Unless more power is considered a bad thing? ;)

Porting is easy. Just take your time, have decent tools and don't do anything too aggressive without knowing what you're doing. Read up on it and use a template and pictures for your reference. :)

jacobcartmill 09-04-06 07:28 PM

interesting. i made 222whp/210wtq i think back in the day in my blue s5 TII on 10psi on stock ecu. this was with kevin landers streetporting, full 3" exhaust, 2.5" TID, stock ecu.

i dont think your numbers are that far off if its a really hot day.

jarret would be above 450whp if he had even a medium sized streetport...

also, i dont see a bnr stage1 making 300whp, especially through stock ports; 275whp at most.

SmogSUX 09-04-06 08:20 PM

^:werd: I made 300 rwhp on a BNR stage 3 @ 11 psi on a mild street port...that's with standalone >.<;

Dom_C 09-04-06 09:43 PM

i made 210rwhp at 6-7psi on stock turbo. Rtek 1.5 ecu, ssac tubular manifold, rb exhaust, 3inch tid. . that was my old setup. The dyno sheet is floating around here somewhere.

Well, I guess I will probably be streetporting it then. I'll try it out. I might as well try something new. Since you guys persuaded me too. but it sounds like a good plan.

Sideways7 09-04-06 11:29 PM

If you don't trust yourself doing the porting, you can take to it a shop and it generally costs about 300. There are severl shops in cali that do it, but not sure how close to fresno.

You made 296.5whp with what turbo? I thought I saw somewhere on here that somebody did 290's on 14psi with bnr stage 1. well, i decided to do a small streetport, and nothing to big and will probably have a shop do the porting. so is it possible with the bnr stage 1 at 14-15psi with a small streetport to make 300rwhp? or is BNR just lying. And I will probably be looking for a megasquirt, haltech, and microtech is too pricey brand new and dont wanna chance with a used computer.

this is no comparison, J-rat is probably pulling 360-380 to the wheels without the race fuel and alcohol injection on a basically stage 4 hybrid equivalent turbo. porting would definitely make it easier to open up some more power and streetporting is reliable. for j-rat it is more of a challenge to pull HP out of a stock port motor but if you ask him, while doing a rebuild i am quite sure he would open the ports also.

not me i was talking about smogsux but yeah he does have a stage 3 bnr but is also running low boost and other little problems that are getting fixed as we speak (or type) so he should be hitting much better numbers when he gets his stuff straightened out, i just like messing with him

I haven't heard of any reliability issues as a result of streetporting. Templates are available at Mazdatrix pretty cheap and as long as you're careful, it can be done in a weekend. Also don't rule out smoking coming from turbo seals.....a "coked" bearing housing allows pressurized oil to blow past the seals. I'd hate to see you rebuild just to have the smoke still be there. And if you're gonna run more than 10 psi boost, you might consider a fmic, the stock tmic is only efficient up to around 10.

RotaryEvolution 09-06-06 12:34 AM

far as im concerned streetporting is more reliable since the ports are beveled afterwards. the only disadvantage they have is the engine produces more power and we all know more power has a tendency to wear things quicker and break things quicker, the ports really have nothing to do with that... your foot does.

I do plan on buying a FMIC. thats a must.

Thats good to hear. But there is one problem. Can I still pass smog every 2 years with a streetport engine. I know its not legal in california, so its not gonna pass the sniffer test, huh? That got me thinking. I do want to give it a streetport though.

The Wankler 09-06-06 10:30 AM

Mine passed the sniffer with a streetport.

though i'm sure it is in the books that changing the port timing(much like changing the camshaft in a piston engine) is against emission laws there is no way the state can tell if an engine is ported or not.

with my large street port, 80mm turboback exhaust and Bonez single high flow cat i passed emissions by about 1/10th the allowable limit so your worries are unconstituted and it is nothing to worry about.

Tight. Alright, I'm gonna streetport for reals now. I have to beat a Miata 1.8 Turbo that has 230hp at 10psi, or so he claims. He says he will come next years Dynoday at put out low 300s or very close to 300 at his max efficiecy of his turbo. I want to win next years 2.99 and under class with 1 F.I. Unless my boy's 13bre Gt40 FC comes, then I'm screwed. Well, I want to beat that Miata at least and show some shit talkers that I will get the rebuild and turbo upgrade done. They think my rx7 boys and I are bullshittin with what we gonna bring next time, so I wanna slap em in the face with it even though My boys FC will already. I know I have nothin to prove to them, but I am doing this for myself too, and hope to run high 12s at least with some drag radials or slicks. Btw, these are thread posting junkies that think they are GOD with their nitrous infected v8 domestics. And they say I think Rx-7s are god. They need to look closer at themselves talkin about japanese cars cant make good power and arent worth buying. ok, well 2 much talkin, so lets end this by saying, "End of next summer at the latest, the Rebuild and BNR Stage 1 and FMIC and 15psi tune will be done. But hoping to get a T4, if I can get enough money, but then I would have to buy a standalone too, so I doubt it.

jacobcartmill 09-06-06 06:59 PM

you're going to need like 260-270whp to beat your buddy's miata if he's got 230whp. if he has 300whp, you're going to need atleast 350whp.
