361/277 - 12.5 psi

Sooo, my dyno day didn't go exactly as expected... but it was promising!

First off, when I got there, I got out of the car, locked it and when in to talk to the guy. Came back out after getting the "okay," put the key in, turned and SNAP. Lost my only key. Luckily I got it out and resolved, but it was a 3 hour set back in the day.

Got the car up and ready and gave it a go at 10 psi.. no reading. :I
Turns out the guy had it set up incorrectly, so after some fiddling around we got it to work well.

I turned on the boost controller and dropped it down a few notches because I was a little iffy about doing 1 bar.. just didn't feel right.. didn't 100% trust the guys at the shop, didn't 100% trust the tune, and it turns out there was a small methanol leak (thank god I found that).. so, in the end I got a 12.5'ish (fluctuated from 12.4-12.7 on the datalog) psi pull in. The car made 361 rwhp and 277 ft lbs of torque, and sounded plenty healthy. At the end of the second run though, if you listen REALLY close, it gets a little rough at about 7800rpm.. wasn't too happy about that so I decided to call it a day.. not worth losing a motor just for some silly numbers.

My plugs were pretty disgusting as well, so that might have had something to do with it.. the car feels great though and that's all I really care about.

12.5 psi pull in 3rd (this was one of the reasons why I wasn't too sure about the guys at the shop.. I had to tell them to do a 4th gear pull):

12.5 psi pull in 4th (listen at the end really close.. you'll hear it get a bit rough at the very tail end of the pull):

car is a beast man. It's not uncommon for 5-speed cars to do pulls in 3rd and 6-speed to use 4th. I want a ride tonight if you bring it to taco7

Your leadings plugs are pretty much dead for trying to get best power.
I wouldn't be surprised if you pick up another 20hp just be changing to new plugs with your set-up.

What kind of plug ARE those? i have never seen one quite like that.

looks like standard NGK plugs as far as I can see.

Yup, that's what I figure as well.. will be replacing them tomorrow, and I'll return to the dyno as soon as I feel more comfortable with running more boost.

And to the previous question, they are just your normal, run of the mill NGK Platinums.. I run 9s all around.. I might go a smidgen colder though.

Ok, these must be plugs just for the Rotary then, since I have never seen a plug like that in a piston engine. haven't pulled mine yet either.

360+ whp on 13 psi is very impressive.

Must be a nice street port on that motor=D

I hope to have some fun, i have always wanted an rx7 and to mess with a rotary.

So far it has been pretty interesting.

The biggest thing that will confuse you about rotary spark plugs is the lack of the need to gap them properly.. you literally just thread them in, make sure they're torqued properly, and call it good. Piece'a cake.

I have some upcoming projects on the car.. originally, I wanted to make it STUPID fast, and thus removed all creature comforts... at this point, however, I have found that adding a couple hundred pounds of sound deadening/stereo/possibly a resonated muffler isn't going to hurt anything.

Here's a list of what's coming up:

- Complete tune for 18-20 psi (going to go based on where the turbo seems most efficient) on pump 92/straight methanol via 2 15GPH nozzles. Re-dyno.
- Re-work all wiring on the car (it really has got out of hand in the engine bay.. mostly my fault.)
- Re-install stereo: decent head unit with aux input, 2x2 way 250 watt amps, Infinity Perfects up front, Infinity Kappas in the back
- Get some sound-deadening material in the hatch area (which is currently bare metal), add carpet.
- Re-work exhaust for the 4th time, probably just going to add a loooong muffler.
- Make the engine bay more pretty.. possibly do some ceramic coating, etc etc.

I'll keep you guys updated on when I get back to the dyno with more boost.
