RX 7 vs. Lotus Elise

Here are some vids of yesterdays runs. JSplit was nice enough to bring his digital cam. It was my friends first time at the track and he ran a .1 R/T. I told him he could wait until he was ready but I guess he wanted to take off!

Here's our time slip. I finally got in the 12's after a couple attempts. Best trap was 13.0@110
Enjoy.

Dude, what happened??? you fell asleep at the tree on the first run! The announcer guy( i think, might have been one of you buddies) goes "it might be faster than the mazda" just as youre reeling him in and passing....that was nice!

BMac 09-06-05 04:46 PM

That was the announcer at MIR. That was my best run by far because I wasn't concerned with the light but was reving my engine so I could get on boost for the launch. I was just leaving it pegged at 6k before, this time the reving really helped my launch. Previous 60 ft times were 2.2 at best. 1.9 in the run against the Elise. I told him not to worry about the light, but he caught a great R/T anyway.

Yes he did!!!! he took off almost instantly. It fooled everyone, even i thought he had you beat untill you hit 2nd...lol
Congrats on the time!

13Beast REW 09-07-05 06:45 AM

Nice. I need to come down there and chill with you guys. When's the next time you're going to MIR?

BMac 09-07-05 07:36 AM

I probably won't run my car again till I get some Chome moly axels and maybe a diff brace. I'm pretty happy with my time so I'd hate to break something for a worse time! I don't know if there will be a hang before the end of the season but you can check the NE forum to see if there's one. Some other guys have to get some parts before they're ready to go down the track. We'll probably have some Waldorf hang in the near future though.

afterburn27 09-07-05 09:45 AM

Nice run... looks like Ramy needs a little work on his launching technique lol. I have no room to talk though :P

why? are scared to break something? u arent gonan break somthing with onlyu 300 rwhp.

BMac 09-07-05 05:54 PM

I know guys that broke axels with less power than my car. I think my diff should hopefully be fine if I keep the wheel hop down. But I'd like to know that I can do a good burn out and launch hard at 6-7k and not break an axel. I don't feel the need to go back to the track on the same setup and maybe get a tenth or two better and break.

cbf246 09-07-05 06:40 PM

hahaha. very nice run.

GoodfellaFD3S 09-07-05 10:15 PM

that elise is slow as balls. good run man!

Well, let me change you view on this one! I shattered one of the worm gears in the torsen in four pieces. One of the pieces went right through the cover and made a hole about 4" x 3" on it!!! I wasnt even at the track and yes I did dyno at a little over 300 but on 10psi...i was running 7 or 8 at the time! I had 2 month old Redline 75/90 in it and a diff brace with unobtanium diff mounts so dont be thinking that 300 is nothing....the only thing i can think of is the 275/40 Falken Azenis i'm running.

Were both the RX7 and the Elise stock cars? Because my stock RX7 numbers don't come anywhere close to that. Actually, my Elise will kick a stock RX7's butt. Are you comparing apples to apples (stock vs. stock) or apples to oranges? This post smells a little fishy.

john1 09-15-05 01:22 PM

Also, what's up with the Elise driver. The Elise should have done much better. I've been able to stay between 13.3 and 13.6 in mine and it's a totally stock car without the factory sportpack.

If you look at my signature, you'll see it's obviously not a stock 7. I never claimed that this thread was a heads up "stock vs. stock" race. We just happened to have a cam there and thought you don't see an Elise against a 7 side by side on the drag strip.
That was his first time on the track. Were you running slicks with your Elise? I've heard about some weird ECU cut offs in the higher RPM, so I don't know if his engine was running at 100%. I'm no expert on the subject, but he said if the car isn't at the proper temp, it has a fuel cut I guess. He improved a half second on his next run. Only did 2 runs that day.

Ok, that makes sense. You can't fairly compare an rx7 race car to any stock car. 320 hp against 165 hp, it's pretty silly. Besides the Elise was never designed to be a 1/4 mile drag car. You should get him to autocross or track his Elise. That's what it was designed for, not the 1/4 mile.

His R/T was near perfect. That's pretty amazing if that was really his first time. What was his R/T on the second run?

Like I said my car is totally stock. No slicks! My best 1/4 mile was 13.3 @ 102. Although I know one guy that was able to get 13.1 @ 104 in a stock car. I think he dropped the clutch at 8,000+ rpm to get it.

Yes, the redline moves around on the Elise. If it's not warmed up properly the redline can be anywhere from 6,000 - 8,700 rpm depending on the engine temp. This is programed into the ECU to protect the engine from damage.

I broke one the aluminium suspension part under my car with hard street start with a stock motor. Damaged the trans and the drive shaft dropped. You can snap parts with 300 hp trust me. The FD wasn't made for drag starts.

BMac 09-17-05 10:22 PM

He didn't even plan on racing the Elise, I just convinced him since he was down there to watch me, he may as well do some fun runs. That was his first run on the vid, I even told him to wait since the ET starts when you cross the trap. I remember looking over and he was gone!

Yeah, I really don't feel like breaking anything. I've had plenty of problems with this car, so I'll prob. do some upgrading before I take it back to the track. Is a diff. brace any good? I'll either have another set of axels or look into the chrome moly ones.

i must be lucky then as i have been launching my car with 350 rwhp for several yrs now. MY car has low miles perhaps thats it. Do you you guys have higher miles?

Miss Mazda 09-21-05 03:38 PM

The elise is "slow as balls". LOL

The elise is fairly quick even in a straight line...and its not meant for quarter mile racing. Want to see slow as balls? Find an elise with a decent driver at an autocross or road course....and wave him goodbye because thats the last time you'll see him other than his tail lights for a fleeting second.

BMac 09-22-05 09:44 PM

Yeah, he's probably gonna wipe the floor with me at the autocross considering I've never done one before. Then he'll have his revenge!

dis1 10-17-05 05:32 PM

You sure have come a long way Brian. Now you're faster than me... in a straight line anyway. ;) Now we need to get you out on the auto-x or at a track like VIR or Summit!

John Magnuson 10-17-05 06:01 PM

My mildly modified FD laps road courses faster than an Elise even with a good driver due to my power advantage. I don't know about autocross.

That being said... the Elise handles INCREDIBLY right from the showroom floor. I want one. A lot.

XSTransAm 10-17-05 09:49 PM

one of my good buddies has an elise, it is no doubt a better corner'r than a stock or even lightly modified suspension rx7.

I daily drive my 7 and man he scared the shit out of me on a few corners in the elise :D

BMac 10-19-05 02:21 PM

Yeah, he let me drive his Elise for a little bit. Awesome handling. My 7 felt like a caddy afterwards!
