New times for my stock CYM
 

I went to the local track here in Charlotte. The closest track to my place is Moorseville race track and it's about 20 minutes from my place. It is a 1/8th mi track only. 1/4mi tracks are no less than 2hrs drive from Charlotte so this had to suffice. Anyways, my CYM has Pettit Racing Ground Kit and silicone vac hoses. The car has just turned 45kmi and still has the original dry rotted tires from 1993. Moorseville is known as a somewhat slippery track to begin with so mix in my original tires and you can pretty much guess that i wasn't pulling any of my patented crazy launches. Besides, i wasn't trying to launch the car hard anyways. Here's what i came home with:
60' = 2.01
330' = 5.60
660' ET = 8.58
MPH = 83.999 (LOL)

After that, the launch pad went away and everyone got slower. My next pass was made immediately after my first pass (about 2-3minute lapse between runs) and my car was obviously heatsoaked and down on power. Ironically i still got a halfway decent launch and 60'. Here is the second pass:
60' = 2.07
330 = 5.70
660 ET = 8.70
MPH = 82.043

The effects of heatsoak are easy to see here. So i immediately park the car, open the hood and let the fans run to help cool the engine.
~30-35 minutes later i'm satisfied with the engine bay temps and drop the rear tire pressure down to 23psi and get ready to make another pass. At this point i'm wandering around the staging lanes talking with all the racers (no, not ricers). I spot a guy with a beautiful 69 Camaro thats built, introduce myself and ask him if he notices his 60 footers are going away. He says yes. I talk with another 3 or 4 people, all confirming the same thing: The track surface is going away. So i head out to make my 3rd pass. Hoping that i would find some extra traction by dropping the tire pressure down a little bit, i decide to bring my revs up from 4000 to 4500, hoping that if i could get the tires to bite and ride it on the peak torque out of the hole, then i might nail my 1.9X short time and 8.4X ET i was looking for. The track had other plans. I spun BADLY coming out, then wheelhopped and i let up on the gas for fear of breaking something expensive. Here is the result:
60' = 2.100
330 = 5.74
660 ET = 8.747
MPH = 82.989

At this point i was frustrated and decided that i would ride the clutch out just a tad bit longer this time and launch around 4300rpms. I swing back into the staging lanes knowing i'd be waiting for a little bit and pop open the hood.
Someone on a Hyabusa makes a pass, rides a wheelie to the 330 mark, then decides to step off the bike at well over 90mph. The next hour is spent picking up pieces of the bike, fluids and rider. Finally the track gets clear, and a fellow who owns a *automatic* LS1 Fbody (with 3200 stall )that i had chatted with in the staging lanes comes over. He tells me he just got done making another pass (his first two passes resulted in 2.1 60 footers) and he nailed a 1.90 short time. He tells me they worked on the launch pad a little bit and theres some more bite there. I get excited hoping i can nail a low 1.9 short time, possibly a high 1.8 which would put me right into the 8.40s that i was looking for.

Next up a 78-79 Camaro and older Mustang go out and run. The Camaro gets loose, decides to change lanes from right to left, back to right, kiss the right wall and then kiss the left wall at almost a 90 deg angle at over 80mph. The result is absolute carnage. Women screaming, people running, ambulances rushing. So i just got in my car, backed out of the staging lanes and went home. The last pass was not meant to be i guess. If i can kiss a 8.4X in the 1/8th then i think i'd be DAMN close to running 12s. :)

I hope those people are ok. Those are really good times. I am getting low 9s and I am stock as well with dry rotted tires. You don't have any power mods? 8.5 is REALLY good for stock.

No power mods. Just replaced vac hoses and grounding strap. The key to a good stock FD run is a 4-4500rpm launch, slip the clutch and make sure you shift as fast as you can. :D

I think you enjoy keeping your car stock Darril, but you really need to open her up and let it BREATHE....the car is so choked off from the factory and the IC heat soaks when you sneeze on it

getting my custom flanged turbo outlet and greddy elbow mounted BOV mounted this weekend (I hope) and then I will be back on the road to smack down more Mustangs :)

Mark, i do enjoy keeping the car stock for now. Money is a tad bit on the tight side, especially now since i am moving into a new apartment again and will have to buy a few new items. My clutch is starting to act funny, especially when it gets hot so i think it's lifespan is dwindling away quickly.

I'm going to put the car aside for a month or so and see if i can get some jingle together and replace the clutch and fix my current oil leak. Then the car will come back out. I'm sure i can squeeze a 12.9 out of this car but i don't think it will be on regular street tires. It may require DRs or full fledged slicks to happen but even still a stock CYM kissing a 12 on DRs or slicks is still damn impressive :D

I've uploaded one of my 8.74 runs to Angelfire but i don't know for sure if they offer hotlinking or downloading so this is new ground for me. Anyways, hopefully this will work. This is my slowest pass when i was at the track. And i think the board may have been messed up because on my timeslip it says my mph was 82.989 for my 8.74 run but on the board it says 82.589 mph :confused: Anyways, a friend took this video and passed it along to me. He didn't get my 8.5 second pass on video :(

Damn impressive for a stock FD. Any tips on how to shift mad quick yo ? :D

I mean... it really takes some time to get in into 3rd (unless you want to ruin your syncros or misshift) and by that time all boost is gone by lifting off completely.

Well as long as you push the clutch ALL the way in you should be able to shift "mad quick" without damaging your synchros at all. I don't have the stock shift knob. I have a MOMO piece. Here:

Here is my technique for shifting into 3rd:

-when i am about to shift into 3rd i will hold my hand open as if i were about to choke someone.
-place the wedge of my hand (wedge created by thumb and fingers, where your hand would form a 'V shape from the choke-style hand) against the shifter. **My fingers barely even touch the shifter** My hand is slightly rotated clockwise so that my fingers are pointing directly towards the passenger side door.
-when i shift i immediately stab the clutch all the way to the floor
-begin shifting. If you are really good, you will already be mid-motion with your shift just as your clutch is being pressed to the floor to save time on your shift
-**HERE IS THE SECRET TO A FAST AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, AN ACCURATE SHIFT**
You don't need much force to get the shift lever to go into 3rd gear. Matter of fact, i barely place any force on the gearshifter itself to guide it into 3rd. With very little force, the shiftlever should want to go into 3rd on its own, HOWEVER while i am very gently pushing the gear lever towards third gear, i begin to slowly clasp my hand and fingers around the gear shift lever and try to "twist" the gearshift lever COUNTERCLOCKWISE. If performed successfully, you can do this in one motion. If you gently try to roll the shift knob counterclockwise while simultaneously pushing the shift lever towards 3rd with the "wedge" of your hand you will never miss 3rd gear again, no matter how fast you try to shift. I honestly can't remember the last time i missed 3rd gear (it's been years).

You can pretty much see in the video the way the car accelerates that the shifts are very fast. Usually you can see the nose of the car rise and fall between shifts. In my video, it almost looks as if the car is a automatic the way it stays squatted on it's haunches.

btw, I finally picked up a set of Eibachs for my car....I'm sick of the cushy stock springs wallowing around (good weight transfer for hook-up, tho)

BTW, when i did my RB springs rather than rent those cheesy spring compressors from places like Pep boys, i just took my Tokicos and RB springs to a muffler/suspension shop and had them put the springs on the Tokicos and then i did the rest.

anyway, listen...About the heatsoak...When I get out there the first week of August we can talk about the water injection..I'm gonna hook you up with a good kit. When I tested it at the drag strip, it was the only time out of more than 2 years of runs (probably 80 + timeslips) that my trap speed stayed consistent. I completely eliminated heat soak.

BTW, you need to come out for my race...I'm gonna race my stock 1994 rx-7 against a V8 1993 Rx-7 at a 1/8 track.

David, when you get into town i definetly want to check out this V8 RX-7 you are racing. Please let me know when this is going down. Also, drop me a line when you get into town.

Thats very impressive....I'm non-seq...but with a 2.1 60ft I was only doing 8.6 1/8th mile...but @ 85.6 mph. The 1/4 on that run was 13.0 so your car is running really good for stock!

Thanks racerfoo. With the mods you have on your car i think you are picking up way more ground that me past the 1/8th as evidenced by your 1/8th trap. I'm going to guess that my car traps somewhere in the vicinity of 106-107mph now in the hot weather down here in Charlotte. On a cool night or maybe with some water injection to help stabalize the intake temps and prevent major power loss due to heatsoak, i think the car might have a 108 trap in it if but thats pure speculation on my part. :)

As it stands i think the car will probably run 13.1-13.2 ET-wise and with a 1.9 60 foot perhaps a 12.9-13.0.

BUT thats still slow. I lose to stock 5.0 Foxbodys :D

those are decent times man, good for some low 13's high 12's

actually our local track (30 minutes away, closest 1/4 mile is 2 hours) is 1/8th mile so we always just run the 1/8th.

my 91 TII ran an 8.48et @ 84 mph on the stock turbo @ 12psi with full exhaust/intake/safc/fmic so i'm pretty much maxing out the stock turbo. that run was with a 1.999(lol) 60ft. and i'm quite a bit faster than a bone stock FD (or so i thought, you may have proved me wrong) most FD's usually run high 8's running sequential and totally stock, right? great times man.

Jacob, thanks. Yeah i'm told that those are some great times for a stock FD. I'm sure with some DRs or slicks i can probably get real close to hitting a 12. We'll see. I'm heading to the track one of these nights when it isn't terribly hot here in Charlotte.

your driving skills are very very excellent. Nicely done! Now to learn your 3rd gear shifting technique!

Good times man good times. I still haven't gotten an official time for a run on my car yet but once I get it back I'll try it out. Before my car went out I launched at 5k rpm's and always did well that way. But now I have a exedy stage 1 clutch, a short shifter (no more 3rd gear misses =D), and new tires so this should be interesting to how fast I can really go. It will also be my first time doing an official 1/4 mile too.

BTW: That 3rd gear shifting technique really does work most of the time if you get it down. I kind of had a variation of it when I used it, I just grabbed the top with my fingers on top of the knob and my palm directly behind it and pushed straight up and it found itself directly to 3rd gear. Always worked for me.

Yup. I run 8.5s in the 1/8th but lose to stock 5.0s apparently :D

stock 5.0's run high 9's :)
