Finally! BNR Stage 3 high boost dyno results

Hey everyone,

thanks to my bud Steve Kan of our shop (Gotham Racing) for working waaaay into the night to fine tune my FD and extract maximum safe horsepower out of my setup---give the guy Big Gulp Dr. Peppers and he is an animal, lol. He really did an outstanding job under stressful conditions.....my throttle response and driveability is unbelievable, not to mention the craziness that happens at WOT :bigthumb: .

Bottom line, 421 rwhp and 340 rwt at 17.5 psi (on c16 race gas) and 366 rwhp and 280 rwt at 13.5 psi on pump gas. After the 13.5 psi pulls we switched to c16 and immediately lost 5 rwhp (after a cool down period) compared to the previous run at 361 or so. I want to say the car made 390ish on race gas at 15 psi, but don't have the sheet with me.

EGTs peaked at 1300ish degrees low boost runs and 1400ish degrees high boost. I believe that he tuned me for mid to high 10 AFRs.

We wanted to push the turbos more, as they showed no signs of being overly stressed, but my injectors (850s and 1300s) were seeing 100% duty cycles at the high boost rwhp output. On the 366 rwhp pull I saw 86% peak injector duty cycle. This brings up an interesting question as to the correlation between these numbers and dynojet numbers. I am of the opinion that my fuel injectors should max out at a much higher level than 420, more like 450-475ish. The shop owner and dyno operator told me that most cars at my hp level make 10-20 more rwhp on a dynojet. I plan on hitting a dynojet within the next few weeks with a tank full of c16 to see what happens :D.

Here is a list of relevant mods that I have previously posted:

Motor built and ported by myself, using Steves housings as a rough template, basically a Gotham Racing stage 2 streetport
all stock internals in the motor to include 2 piece 2mm oem apex seals
new BNR3s set up full non-seq
M2/ASP large SMIC
All accessories deleted and running one stock main pulley
K&N filters (hardpipe kit deleted)
downpipe/res midpipe (magnaflow muffler)/PFS Catback
850cc/1300cc/Supra Pump
Jacobs FC1000 amp on FC leading coil/b10egv spark plugs leading and 9s trailing
Throttle body coolant deleted, Double throttle deleted, UIM opened up
Spec sprung 6 puck clutch/M2 light flywheel

sweet....

nice numbers rich :)

rebuild FD 07-10-05 09:15 PM

should be around 380 at 15 psi and 93 pump gas, that's what I'm hoping for

nice #s

Nice Numbers!! BNR'S Here I come!

rebuild FD 07-10-05 09:17 PM

I don't know if this is classified info, but does Steve always tune for mid to high 10s (AFRs) or were you just playing it safe?

Rogue 07-10-05 09:18 PM

Rich photoshopped that dyno sheet. Word on the street is he really drives a Honda Civic hatchback with a carbon fiber hood and unpainted body kit.

potatochobit 07-10-05 09:28 PM

if you are non sequential is there any advantage to using the ported twins over a single turbo?

Cgotto6 07-10-05 09:33 PM

Good to see that those BNR's are putting their money where their mouth is. Good numbers. Must be a blast to drive.

fastcarfreak 07-10-05 09:50 PM

Im still jealous that your car is making that much power Rich. I liked the way the car felt before the tune. I wish i put the car on the dyno now, cuz im really curious how much power steve made for me. I am hoping the car is putting about the same amount of power as you at that boost level, but there is no way to know for sure unless i dyno it. Steve says he thinks its making about 400. Im gonna throw some race gas in it when I get back home and fine tune the rest of the fuel mixture with my new wideband up to about 20 psi. I figure if i tune on just the race gas and run my water injection after, i should be fine. Good luck with your new tune, and have fun. I hope your breaks are up the task, lol. :)

Cost is much less, and they make about the same power as a T78. Well worth it if you ask me.

rynberg 07-10-05 10:02 PM

Awesome! Very nice power, Rich! :bigthumb:

I'm getting excited to see what these puppies will do in sequential in my car....

As to your duty cycle issue, could this be a situation where you're hitting the wall of that fuel pump? Do you still have the stock pump wiring?

Jodeny 07-10-05 10:23 PM

Rich,
Nice numbers. What was your baseline power before tuning?
John

Great numbers!
You should have had more than enough injector for that power though...

exactly. I am (optimistically) thinking that perhaps the dynapack reads lower than the dynojet, which is the baseline everyone uses......

I was running a good map that steve loaded in at the L.I. tuning. I think the first pull was 355 at 13.5 psi, something like that. What's your take on the injector duty issue John?

thanks T. I think your FD is going to have an insane powerband, something like 3000 to 8000 :D. I still have the stock pump wiring, but I think that would manifest itself in a pressure issue, which we didn't experience.

Nice meeting you this weekend adam, I'm glad steve was able to get your 7 dialed in. I really enjoyed taking you for a ride, as a T78 FD owner I definitely wanted to get your take on the way the car pulled....definitely hit the dyno and let us all know how you do, but don't forget that race gas ;)

AgentSpeed 07-10-05 11:36 PM

Nice numbers Rich. These BNR's are great!!!

rotorbrain 07-10-05 11:49 PM

dude, thats nice. . . the part about the injectors scares me, though. . . i have the same configuration. if i dont hit 400rwhp with my car because of these stupid fuel injectors. . . my car will have a brand new dent!!!!!

oh, and btw rich. . . you gotta fill me in on how that desert feels. . . cause it looks like ill be experiencing it before the years over. :/

r0gu3 07-11-05 03:21 AM

Congrats Rich! Now up the fuel and try 20+ psi. ;)

dubulup 07-11-05 08:44 AM

are you seeing max boost ~5200?

seems like the air path of twins make dyno plots a little wavey???

GoodfellaFD3S 07-11-05 09:32 AM

I also need to thank the guys at Car Version 2----they have an immaculate shop and are very customer-oriented.

Big thanks to Dan "Scrub" McVicker for setting up the whole event, for scoring me the c16 needed to make the runs, and also for his hospitality at the BBQ at his house.

All around, two thumbs up :bigthumb::bigthumb:!

Rich

Boostn7 07-11-05 10:16 AM

Congrats Rich !!!
Nice numbers :-)

Depending on your base fuel pressure your injectors should flow up to ~480rwh close to 95-100% inj duty.

No full boost 'till ~5200rpm !!!!

Boost looks unstable as well going by your torque curve.

If you're still using the Mazda turbine housings I believe you will/are at the limit of flow thru them....no matter what compressor.
