122.xx mph trap speeds,

BUT I'm only running 12.7's and 12.8's. These are my best times to date. I have only made ten passes total with the car. Does anyone else have a hard time getting into third at the track with a short shifter? I made 439rwhp during the summer and even though I'm running some Toyo street tires, I still think something isn't right. Any replies?????????????

turb0x2 11-11-05 09:33 PM

what are your 60 times??? I am making about 420 myself and although i have no problem getting into 3rd my 60's are 2.4-2.5 (which is aweful as we all know)range with traps around 118 and times in the upper 12's...my problem is simply traction even though i run a bf ta/kd 285/30 in the rear I dont really get much traction until 3rd....i plan on putting in the kaaz unit and using some drag slick to really get the times i should be hitting...

showoff 11-11-05 09:33 PM

what rpm are your shifting out of second at? the more i wind out second via pass 8500 its becomes hard to get into third, but if i shift right at 8500 or before it goes in much easier (just something i noticed). the power is there for a good e.t, thats shown by your trap speed, just gotta get some traction and a decent 60'

My best 60' so far was a 2.1 I believe. They are, however, mainly in the 2.3-2.5 range.

I've been shifting at a different RPM each time. Last night I was shifting at 8000 in between each gear. Do you think thats too low?

My main problem is by focusing so much on getting the car into gear, I neglect to keep my right foot floored. I am going back to the track in a few- hopefully with better results. Thanks to all who responded.

i never expierenced trouble at to low of a rpm, only to high, just get some good track time and see what works well for you...

You guys should be well into the 11's with over 400 rwhp. Get some drag tires! Not only will they significantly improve your times, the soft sidewall will absorb most of the shock instead of your diff.

When I first got my fd I would occasionally miss 3rd, be loose and try shifting it with the palm of your hand.

I think you just need more practice/track time. You will start to get better lauches and do better 3rd gear shifts. I been going to the track often, and tonight I beat my best times and speeds by a lot, mostly all from getting better launches and better driving. My 60's used to be bad like 2.4, everyonce in a while like 2.0 . Then I learned to slip the clutch better, started consistently reducing the 60 ft's and tonight I did a 1.88 60 ft and 12.31 @ 116.39 mph, all on stock rear street tires and stock rear rims, stock turbos and stock motor just turned 100k miles, Spec stage 2 clutch, all other mods under the hood, stock rear diff. and axles, aftermarket toe links and trailing arms. I was also topping out at 15-16 psi. My tires spin a little after shifting into 2nd and they spun in 3rd just barely on my best run, I really don't think they spin much if any at all at the start in first gear, I don't hear them spin, if I do the clutch perfect it grabs and goes fast.

I usually always shift rather slowly into 3rd compared to the other gears, there is a much higher chance I will miss 3rd when trying to shift fast, I've done it many times at the track, but practically never on the street. I think it is because on the street I always shift using my palm and I am more used to shifting that way, but at the track I hold the stock shifter on the side and I guess I am just not as accurate that way.

It was the last night of the year, I'll get some slicks for next year. I shift between 7500-8000, not trying to over rev the old motor.

you need stickier tires............but you will break driveline parts if you do.... 124mph is great!

adictd2b00st 11-14-05 12:47 AM

12.0 is alot better, atleast your improving! keep at it, its all in that first 60'

buy some tires.

also 122mph traps is indicative of of less power than u said u dynoed at.

You're right. I am only making 417 at 14 psi.

that pretty good power for that boost. who tuned it?

GoodfellaFD3S 11-15-05 08:37 PM

Awesome chris, trapping 124 mph at only 14 psi is quite impressive....looks like that Gotham turbo kit that steve specced out is putting down some serious power throughout the rpm range. I need to get out to the track with you sometime next season :)

Thanks for the compliment. The fellow in this article tuned my car:

Here is a link to my dyno chart if you're interested:

I will be going to the track again this Friday night (weather permitting), and hopefully be into the 11's before the season ends.

Does anyone have any advice on how I can improve my 60' time on these street tires? Thanks.

How do you launch? I hold the revs at about 5k and slip the clutch, no wheel hopping and fast acceleration with no rev dropping, when I do it right, it is not easy to do just about perfect, but that's the best way IMO, I don't think the tires spin at all either.

in this cool weather...ide say sli[p clutch out somewhere in neighborhood of 3500-4000. make sure u dont slam on the gas either....ease into it.

I had been dumping the clutch at different rpms each time, until ALNY93R1 told me to slip the clutch and shift at 8200 rpms. Whalla, I got a 12.0 @ 124 mph. I also have been bouncing the revs up to about 4k. Should I just be holding it steady?

Should I floor it in first, after I hook?

Thanks for all the advice by the way.

GoodfellaFD3S 11-16-05 03:57 PM

hold the rpms constant, no point in bouncing.

Yes hold it steady, you will be more consistent holding it steady, and yes floor it. Hold the gas steady at the desired rpms, ease out the clutch slowly and push the gas to the floor at the same time, just before the green light. You need to do it just right so that when the car starts moving your rpms continue to build and not drop like they do if you let the clutch out too fast or dump the clutch (and the car should accelerate very fast with no deceleration from revs dropping). It will take lots of practice to get good at it, I actually am still not perfect but my last launch was pretty close to perfect when i got a 1.88 60' . I started out doing the exact same you were doing, bouncing the revs and dumping the clutch, usually resulting in wheel hop or the revs dropping low after dumping the clutch, and average 60' time of 2.3 . I think this way of lauching is alot easier on the suspension and drivetrain, just not as good on the clutch wear, so make sure you don't wear out your clutch too fast. good luck.

Your single turbo probably doesn't spool up as fast as my stock turbos so that will hurt your launches unless you can keep those revs high and not let them drop below 4k. And if you do it just right I don't think your back tires will spin.

people bounce or bounce of rev limiter to build boost. i would think it would give u a better 60 time if u can get the traction.

sure....why not? i trap 118 with 360 rwhp. i figure u gain 1mph per 10rwhp. i trapped 116 mph with 340rwhp.

Because his 438rwh @ 16psi is a better match to that 124.7mph then the 417rwh !!!

I know exactly what RWH it takes to run 125mph traps.......in a normal weight FD.

Either way....he needs some drag tires to make good use of those traps.

NICE NUMBERS !!! That top end power got you on the 11's :-)
Safe to assume that was not @ 14psi :-) hehehe

It was nice to chat again...
Unfortanately for me I split open my diff case.....wheel hop with the ET street radials was too much.

Get some tires and 10's are not too far.

LUPE 11-19-05 09:22 PM

What boost level did you turn it up to on that 127mph run?

cripsR6 11-24-05 08:53 AM

Around 17 psi, BUT there was some spiking going on according to the data logs. I also had some new sounds driving home from the track on Saturday; I'm not to sure what is wrong yet.

LUPE 11-24-05 07:04 PM

only 17psi and trapping 127mph? What the hell ? That's incredible.

Congrats Chris, that turbo kit is amazing! Perhaps you should call me back when you get a chance, speed racer ;)

Where is that 366rwhp@11psi dyno chart you were suppose to send me from your car? did you ever fix that tranny?
