1980 Anniversary Edition RX7 Conversion to TII 13B Journey - Draft

1980 Anniversary Edition RX7 Conversion to TII 13B

This is the journey of my 1980 Anniversary Edition RX7, which I bought in 1981 and converted to a 13B turbo engine.

I wanted a "fast" daily driver. For years I collected parts for the first gen body & interior parts and TII components for the upgrade. I bought a TII engine and TII parts car (running - kind of), but ended up putting a new 13B crate engine from Rotary Performance (Garland, TX) and used the parts from 88 S4 TII parts car(s). The engine was manufactured by Mazda (left over from a special order) 13B Crate Engine: 4-port TII block, GLS-SE Rotors, 9:4:1 Compression Ratio, and 3mm Apex Seals. I have to give credit to the guys at Rotary Performance for their help & patients (past & present -Mark, Matthew, & Chris) - good people.

In with the New:

Had 2 got-ya's:

First the cross member need to be notched to fit the turbo:

I had to remove some metal from the cross brace. I have an extra cross member and when I get to it I'll do a better job and replace.

Second, One of the heater Tube was blocked - ended-up the part on intake could be removed.

Then it needed to be started.

Yes that is PVC pipe... used just to test - in very short durations.

The major fabrications were:

Oil Tube for Turbo

The oil return tube needed to be welded - it was tricky to tighten and align.

Fuel Pump

I rigged-up support - making sure fuel filter could be changed easily and mounted near the fuel tank.

Inter-cooler Mount

I made the lower mounts adjustable and once set - I screwed in the lower cross bar.
