Work Emotion XD9 vs CCW Classics for my FD
 

I'm torn between these two wheels. Just wondering what you guys think?

I just sent my car to the paint shop to get an updated 99 spec front end with new mud flaps all around. It's getting a fresh coat of Montego Blue and I wanted to get some wheels at the same time. I don't want any hella crazy flush wheels but I do want something that fits without crazy camber and maximizes wheel size. I love the stock body look so i don't want to pull the fenders. I don't mind rolling the inner lip some.

Some mods that might help wheel fitment:
Tein Flex coilovers
Rotary Extreme Toe/Trailing Arms
Stock Brakes
25.25" fender height
1.5 degrees camber
caster is set to ~6

I've broken it up between the two but still can't decide:

CCW Classics (18x10 +50 all 4 corners):
Lightweight (21lbs)
Racing wheels
Fully polished
Great offsets
Fits huge tires (285's with minor mods)
Cost more, 1-4 weeks wait time

Work Emotion XD9 (18x10+38 all 4 corners, maybe +18 in rear depending on fitment)
Heavier but not much more (26lbs)
Street wheels
Matte Black/Bronze (Black cost additional amount)
Not so great offsets, but can make them work
Uses smaller tires to fit stock rear fenders
Cost less than CCW's, readily available

The benefits seem to point to the CCW's but I'm split still. What do you think?

I don't know how fixated on the 18x10 all round on the ccw's you are but if I could do it again I would NOT have gone this route.

I have ccw sp500's at 18x10+50. I would do 18x9+45 front and 18x10+40 or 10.5+48ish in the back. The 285/30-18 requires no mods in the back. Nor would a 295/30-18. Also in case you don't already know, the rear is narrower than the front by just a tad.

The 18x10 in the front will cause the car to want to drive itself unless the roads are perfect. It's great for the track but not so much for the road. I wish I had thought about it back then but most of the fastest most expensive cars out there don't run a 10 in the front. It's not really needed. I'm sure someone will flame me for saying so but a 10in isn't needed up front.

Either way my vote is 100% for the CCW's.

I will also mention that fully polished is a nightmare to keep clean and I don't even have the classics. I only have 5 spokes to deal with. :-)

I really want the 18x10 for rotating but I don't think 285's fit on the front of the car without some modification.

Yeah I've heard the rear is maybe 10mm different than the front. I don't have much experience with wheels on RX-7's so I don't know how much of a difference it makes. Is it very noticeable?

What size tire do you run in the front? What specs did you get it aligned to? I've heard the alignment makes a huge different with bump steer. Now that you mention it though, I've noticed a lot of people run 9" on the streets and then convert to 10" on the track. I guess it's really just one of those things that we like to see equal sizes front and rear mentally.

I was thinking the polished will be a pain to keep clean. I'll probably stick to the polished look but if I did paint it, I can't decide on any colors. I was thinking Matte Black would look cool, but I haven't seen anyone paint the entire wheel that color on a RX-7 yet. Maybe some MB paint? Maybe gray?

Looks like 2 for CCW - 2 for XD9's (Local guys here)

If it were me, it would be a no brainer for the XD9's. I've never been a fan of the CCW's for the FD. The CCW's look too "American" for me for a Japanese sports car. The CCW's look fantastic on Corvettes and other American style power cars but to me they never looked right for the FD.

As for the sizing, I would agree with Exidous.

The "narrowness" for the rear is noticeable with all of the wheels being of equal size. I have rolled fenders in the front to fit the 285/30-18's but that is it. The entire suspension is set to within factory specs with a little input from Howard Coleman's thread.

I have a 5mm spacer in the back and it is still noticeable and I'm only running -.5-1* camber.

The 285/30-18's do not rub anywhere and my ride height is at 25"F 25.5"R.

I will agree on the CCW's looking American. Although some are very European style. Mostly the monoblock Corsair line.

if you roll the fenders you will have no problem fitting the xd9s.

Either one is fine just don't get the CCWs with chrome or polished centre because they look like they are for an American car then.

Personally I'd go with XD9s 18x10 +38F and +18R with 255/35 tyres. Great fitment and stance can be achieved with this configuration.

+50 offset of the CCWs is good if you want 285s but then you are decreasing the lightness advantage of the wheels a bit.

For the Works I'd probably go:

18x9 +43 (Front Should fit fine without any rolling or pulling.)
18x10 +38 Rear (Will need the inside lip rolled up but no pulling.)

Why not look at some of the new CCW forged monobloc wheels? The Classics look homemade to me, always have, and the centers are tiny. I'd only use them as track wheels.

I like both, but I agree CCW do make the car look a little domesticish.

I have the CCW SP500's. With the exception of the size that I'm not overly happy with, I love 'em.

285's in the front never bothered me on my FD?

Consider this a vote for the CCW's. The XD9's look too generic to me.

+1 for rear offsets <= +45mm in the rear.

I have 18x10+50 all around with 285/18/30 Hoosier A6 tires.

Some sledgehammer engineering was applied to the inner fender wells and after market offset trailing arms were installed.

Even with that I got some tire rub on the inside, and installed 5mm spacers which seems to have fixed the issue.

The Hoosier A6's are fairly meaty. More-so than just about any street tire. The aftermarket trailing arms are needed but sledgehammer engineering is not if you are running street tires. :-)

ccw classic look very nice

I have 18x10 +50 mm with 285 all around and I totally agree with you. I would go with 18x9 in front instead.

So I finally decided and went with the CCW's. I know a lot of people hate the CCW's but I wanted to get the most tire I could stuffed under the stock body. Not too many wheels can do that like the CCW's. I decided to get a hybrid street/race setup in fully polished to get center caps but also remain somewhat light. I took a few pictures of the wheels but since the car is in the body shop it's hard to lower the car to see how the wheels will look when it's all said and done. I think it turned out pretty good so far and will look a lot better with some minor tweaking after the paint is finished.

sorry to thread jack but i am thinking about getting some work emotions cr ultimate depending on how the cr kai look on my brothers gf's car when they come in (pretty much same exact style) and test put them on my car before ordering... i was thinking about gettin 17x8 to 8.5 up front and 17x9 to 9.5 in the rear... not sure what offset to go with tho.

There are excel sheets that can help you with offsets stickied in the Suspension/Wheels/Tires/Brakes section. :)
