Width difference... does it affect anything?
im going to buy a new set of tires in the next month or so. i was going to buy falken ZE-512 205/60/14 for my GSL-SE on stock rims, and then i realized that they also sold the RT-615 which they only sell in 195/60/14. i want the RT-615 due to the aggressive tread pattern and i used them on my 240 a while back and loved the characteristics, but i dont want to buy them if there is a downside to going with a narrower tire.
is there anything that will affect my car as far as speedo, rpm, odo readings going with a 10mm narrower tire? |

A 195/60 is a smaller tire than the 205/60. It will change your speedometer and odometer because the tire has a smaller circumference. It won't make your sidewall stiffer because the aspect ratio is unchanged. |

a 195/60r14 tire will have a slightly smaller circumference than a 205/60r14. the 60 in both sizes is the aspect ratio. meaning the side wall is 60% of the tread width which is the first number of each tire size. so 60% of 195 is smaller than 205, therefore a slightly smaller circumference and diameter wheel. so it will affect your speedo and odo slightly. rpm is engine speed which is a separate issue and could probably take up a whole other thread of discussion, which probably is already on here somehwere.

the change is so minimal its not worth even noting
unless u changed ur profile from a 50 series to a 40 series then ya theres more of a change or if u went from a 15 to a 17 or 18 then ya but circumference (sp? i dont care) a lot of recommended tire sizes to wheels actually makes them within very close spec to what u had oem so ur odo/speedo doenst change mcuh at all thats even worth noting if ur worried about 5km/hr or like 2mph or sumin then im not sure modifying ur car in any way is for you ahahahaha |
The size difference, either in diameter or width isn't a big deal... that's not much of a difference, either for traction, speedo, odo, or sidewall stiffness (all things being equal)
If the 195 tire is a higher performance tire or a race tire (I'm not familiar with the brand), you might check the specs to find our that it's actually wider than the 205 of the lower performance tire. The written size is nominal. Check the specs. Sidewall stiffness, and actual traction/handling will be more down to the differences in the models, with regard to compound and construction. Without knowing anything about it, I'd get the better tire and screw 10mm. |
