Whats is the widest tire I can fit on a 17x7?

My current setup is good BUt i want more grip on the front.

CUrrent setup is

FRont: 17x7 215/40/17's Falken AZEnis

Rear: 17x9 255/40/17 Falken 152's or 142's i forget.

The rims wrent the best choice i KNOW. But they were hella cheap. 400 shipped brand new.. you cant beat that=D
SO i decided to make these my grip set.
I knew i wanted A LOT of grip on thge rear. SO i went with 255's. ANd they grip perfect for my power.
Now i must choose a tire that compensaTES FOR THAT SUPER REAR GRIP.

on COrner entrance i dont get understeer at all. BUt on the exit the front likes to push because of the 255's.

I need to know if i can ffit 225's or even 235's on the 7" wide fronts. Im trying to run at least 225/40 azenis on the front.

I have searched for calculators.. at it seems like 215's is as biggest you can go on a 7" wide wheel. Had anyone gone wider on and what tire should work for me?

I have 225/45/17 on the rear of my Turbo 1gen and they fit beautifully. Doesnt bubble out, but protects the rim nicely.

You can get a 225 on there, but its still gonna understeer. I'm gonna assume you have a FC since FDs have wider wheels than that stock. FCs really don't like staggers, especially on near stock suspension.

I have JIC classics... YEs it is an FC .. and the wheel si have are the SPort max's

WHat the car does is , WHen im trying to exit a corner, it will sit on the gripy 255 rears and push the front with understeer until i over power the 255s and go into a slight drift.

SO 225's are possible but 235's is out of the question?
I just need more meat on the front... and maybe add more PSI to my rear tire...

Gotta get rid of the under.

stretch a 215 o r 225 on the 9.

either that or get a not-2"-width-stagger set of wheels

junito1 03-04-09 01:22 PM

I know that i could get a 8 in wide front wheel. And that would solve my prob.

I AM on a budget.. so Im exhuasting all possibilities.

I also know i could put thiner tires on the 9in. rear wheels but.. Im loving the grip these 255's give me.. SO its out of the quesion to replace the 255's.

I guess i will have to consider wider front wheels. atleast a 17x8. ugh. $$$$$$$$$$$$

jdmsuper7 03-04-09 01:37 PM

16x8s are a dime a dozen these days if you don't mind running a smaller wheel. You can get a 225/50 in a bunch of sticky tires. Mustang wheels can be had very cheaply as well and they are a 17x8 with FC friendly offsets.

Josh18_2k 03-04-09 01:49 PM

you can get better fitting wheels for cheap.
unless you're a prude, go with 95-04 mustang wheels. 17x8F and 17x9 Rear. they fit perfect, and you can fit up to 255's in front.
there are a few decent styles to choose from. check out americanmuscle.com, or ebay, or whatever else.

I will look into factory wheels that could match.
I will look up the muntang offset ANd try to find the right factory wheel of my prefrence.. thnx

aznpoopy 03-04-09 04:34 PM

just consider it doing your part to save the american economy. :)

LOL. no mustang wheels on my baby. Im gonna test fit my bros evo 8's enkies. they r 17x8.

jdmsuper7 03-05-09 01:16 PM

I picked mine 99 GT wheels for like $250 shipped. Ebay is your friend. If you take the centercaps off, nobody will know unless you tell them. See sig.

If you look at the wheel specs for any tire, it gives the reccomended width range.

About a 225/45-17.

Josh18_2k 03-05-09 07:46 PM

sportmax > mustang? lol ok...

junito1 03-07-09 06:41 PM

Actually yes... ANything mustang = gayness.

I hate american cars... but if i had to choose.. id go chevy.=D And im not talking wheels... i know they have wierd lug pattern.

So you're saying you'd rather have a cheap, badly made, narrow wheel just because the alternative came on an American car?

Mustang wheels are strong, well made, inexpensive, easy to find, wider, lighter than many aftermarket wheels, fit well, and without the center caps, hardly anyone will recognize them. Yea, that's totally gay.

I've had to tell Mustang drivers that my wheels are Mustang wheels, so it's not like its obvious and I think they look quite good on the car. I certainly wouldn't trust Sportmax wheels to stand up to the sort of use I've put my Mustang wheels through. I had a bad experience with cheap wheels not long ago, so never again will I cheap out on wheels.

do these look gay to you? if so thats cool. everyone i've run into seems to love them.

^^ i do like those... but those arent your normal stang wheels.. what model/year is that?
Those dont look cheap though... ANd was rolling the fenders a must? Spacers? But the ones on JDMsuper7's sig.. im really not feeling those 99 stang gt wheels..

Josh18_2k 03-08-09 04:01 PM

my point was there are more cheap wheels than just OEM mustang. mine were ~430 shipped
with 17x9 +24 all around, you can run up to 255 (F & R), depending on front suspension and camber.
