What width tires will fit on an 8" rim?
 

Hey guys, I tried to do a search on this, but it looks like the search button has been disabled for bogging the server down... so here goes.

I have 8" rims on my 1990 T2. I'm looking for the widest tirest that you can fit on them. The rims are 17x8 with a 38 offset. Does anyone have any experience with this?

I was looking into the Nitto 555R drag Radials, but the only size that made much sense for my application was a 275/45R17, but I don't think that would fit back there... just curious if anyone has tried and what the largest rubber you've been able to squeeze back there.

Im sure a 245 width would fit on an 8" wheel, and Im fairly sure it will fit on the rear of a 2nd gen. Need more opinions

Yeah that's tight, but if you're drag racing (not worried about cornering potential), you'll squeeze a 245-mm tire on an 8-inch wide wheel:)

Yes, these are for my drag radials... How wide of a tire would I need to fit 275s in the back? The Nitto 555Rs seem to come in not too user friendly sizes for me....

Can someone suggest a better, or maybe more compatible drag radial?

9" for 275s. 9 1/2" is ideal.

I've fit 255/50/16s on an 16x8 rim, but I don't recommend it.

Why don't you recommend putting the 255s on an 8" rim? do the tires bulge out a lot? did you get some rubbing or something? Can you be a bit more specific.

i just mounted 245-45-16 toyo t1s on my stock FD wheels 16 x 8, it fits fine, i think there is still room for 255's

BFG Comp T/A Drag Radials would be a better choice, IMO. You won't be able to drive on the road with the BFG drag radials, but you'll get much better times than the "crappy" Nittos:)

Based on BFG's tire spec sheet, BFG's 255/50-16 will fit on 8-inch wide wheel--in fact their "spec measuring rim" IS 8-inches wide! The spec rim is what BFG mounted that particular tire size on, to generate the tire's dimensional data.

You'll only need two, and I know two wheel/tire combos will fit inside an FD...I take four wheel/tires to the road racing tracks (two 275/40-17s and two 245/45-17s Hoosier R3S03 mounted on 9.5 and 8.5 x 17 SSR Comps!).

If you want serious drag racing tires--tires that will have you beating everyone, go with Hoosier drag racing slicks. They have a Quick Time Pro DOT drag slick in 26 x 9.5 x 16 that will work beautifully with 8 x 16 wheels. Hoosiers are known for being very sticky, and very light. You will be in the 12s with these tires. Please note Hoosier Racing Tire's warning label...Hoosier Racing Tires are not meant for public road use, despite their DOT approved rating...

Thanks for the info... but, I'm looking into the Nitto 555Rs as my "street tires" :) and then getting some true slicks for the strip. Are there any other drag radials that will give acceptable public road use? Why couldn't you use the BFGs on the road?

Before I pulled my engine, I ran a qtr at 13.1 @ 109 on the ONE run that I got to make in the car because of the crowd at Gateway Speedway, with Bridgestone Potenza RE71 215s in the back.... Now that I"m going with a 20B and a T-76, I don't think 12s will be much of a problem :evilgrin:
