What tires for stock FD rims?
What tires are u guys using on stock FD rims? Pushing 350rwhp with a light drivetrain, light chasis, and extremely short gearing, and am having a hard time picking tires for the street. I know I could get MT ET streets, or Nitto NT-01s.. but this is a street car, so I want them to last at least close to a year.
Was considering: 225/50/16 Azenis RT 615's 255/50/16 Ziex 512 What are u guys running? The tire selection for 16 inch rims is horrible, I wish we had more choices. TIA :) |
RT615s are nice and sticky. I don't run stock sizes, but I am happy with their grip. I have run two sets of ST215s on my daily driver, and they each lasted more than a year.
I haven't used them personally, but I would expect the Ziex to have much less grip. -Max |
You might consider 245/45-16s, too, which fit on 8" rims and keep roughly the same overall diameter.

Tire Rack has a special going on for the Max Performance Bridgestone Potenza RE050A, since there's a new Pole position version. The 225/50/16 stock FD rim size is marked down from $154 to $79. Or you could go for the Kumho ECSTA MX, top performance dry tire, probably not as good in the wet though, $89 each.

Well what I was planning to do was buy 2 falken ziex 512s for the rear and seeing how they hold up. If they do good, buy 2 more for the fronts. But if they don't do good, I wanted to get better tires for the rear..
But the problem I realized was that the ziex's will be 255/50/16, and nearly every other stickier tire, is smaller. Would I run into problems aside from it being quite odd to having a bigger, slicker, tire up front, and a smaller, softer, tire out back? Thanks for the quick help too :) And I'm only worried about dry. IF i drive in the rain, I am extremely cautious. |
Don't run mismatched or incorrect sizes! The Ziex tires are mediocre performance tires at best. As the others already pointed out, there are very grippy tires out there for not much money.

Those are mediocre tires. The Kumho MX are only 89/tire in that size and will blow those out of the water.

I'm pretty happy with my G-Force Sports. Running that size on my FC.
What don't you like about them, Rynberg? Or are the Kumho's just an all around better tire? |
Where are the MX's? They don't even have them listed on discounttiredirect.
I'm mainly leaning towards the rt-615's now. |
They are just not in the same performance league as Kuhmo MX. The BFG KD is in that realm, not the Sports.

tirerack doesn't have Falken Azenis RT-615's, discounttiredirect doesn't have Khumo Ecsta MX, those are the 2 I need to compare, and I can't. I want the best straight line traction available without going to poor mileage R compounds.

With 350RWHP and tires that fit on 8" rims, one of these will be true:
* grip under acceleration will be poor * treadlife will be poor You can't have it both ways. Sorry. I recommend sticky tires. The Falken RT615 or Kumho MX are good choices. Both will wear relatively fast (compared to your average street tire on a sedan), but not as fast as R-compounds. "Lesser" tires will spin like crazy -- you will be disappointed. Tall sidewalls will help increase the grip, gearing, and rotational inertia (= less spinning), but they start to look silly in a hurry. 255/50-16 might be just over the "silly" line, but it is a matter of opinion. 255s on the rear with 225s in front will look dumb. It will look 10x as dumb the other way. I recommend using the same tires at each corner. You will be able to rotate them, which will extend their treadlife. -Max |

I actually decided on Nitto Nt-555 drag radials. I want 1st gear back and a sub 2.0 sec 60'
Nitto Nt-555 drag radials last longer than BFG's, come in 245/50/16 (96), and they're only $136, so they should be perfect. |

I planned on running 225/50s Front and 245/45s rear. I don't think it would look out of place.
with the 255/50s out back, the sidewall is probably what makes people say it won't look right. |
