type rs brakes vs 99spec type rs brakes?

Hi. I own a 99spec type R rx7 (the model with factory 16" wheels) and there is someone selling a set of pre-99spec type RS brakes.

I would like to know whether that will be an upgrade for me or should I rather look for the 99spec type RS brakes.

Is there any difference between pre-99spec type RS brakes and 99spec type RS brakes?

Thank you!!

i cant answer your question but can hopefully help and would like to say hello to a fellow aucklander!!!

remember US "99 spec" is only 1996 spec over here. i.e US 99 spec is JDM 96 spec

What year rx7 do you have? 1996 or 1999?

Iv got a 1996 rx7 type RS, mine has the bigger brakes -- the front ones are large black calipers that clearly say mazda on them, they also have a number on them, not near my car to check atm but i seem to think the number on them is 29??? could be wrong will check that out.

so, if you have a 1996 rx7 and the brakes i speak of are not the ones you have, but are the ones being sold i think it would be an upgrade -- if these are the brakes you have stick with them.

if your car is 1999 then i have no idea weather 1996 type RS brakes would be an upgrade or not.. good luck !

hi!! haha nice to see somebody from auckland here~~ we shd create a nz rx7 forum =)

my car is a 1999 jdm type r and the brakes being sold are 1996 jdm type rs.

i don't know if series 8 type r got better brakes than 1996 type rs or not.. but i am pretty sure series 8 type rs, rz will have better brakes than the series 8 type r..

any body can provide info on series 8 type r brakes and series 6/7 type rs brakes??

yes we should have our own forum :)
not sure if this is of any help or not but take a look at this thread,
these look like the brakes on my rx7..

https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...ight=rz+brakes

perhaps you could measure the size of your brake rotors and ill measure mine..
that might tell us something?

here is some more possibly useful information!!!
take a look at this site..

http://www.rx7.net.nz/fd-jp-models.html

This site lists each year and the changes/improvements it recieved that year throughout its spec range.

For 1996 type RS it does list big brakes as an upgrade --

moving on from 1996 through to 1999 it does not mention any improvements made to the brakes other then " brake cooling duct 1.6 times bigger "

this would lead me to believe that there were no changes made to the "type R " brakes from 1996 to 1999. The only changes being the on the RZ and RS models which recieved the bigger brakes.
I might be wrong but it looks to me like you will have the same brakes as the 1996/1997/1998/1999 type R -- meaning the 1996 type RS brakes would be an upgrade.
im not an expert but so far thats deffinitly what my research is suggesting
