Toyo T1R or Bridgestone RE11 or Yoko ADVAN Neova AD08

Hi all,

I'm looking for new tires to go on my OEM 16 X 8 FD rims. I really would like to go with a 245/45/16, however the Bridgestone's and Yokohama's only come in 225/50/16s. I currently have T1R 245/45/16s. They have around a little over 12 K on them, are nearly worn out, and have lost a great deal of grip.

My car is only driven around 2K per year, which includes some spirited driving, and a couple of autocrosses per year. I never drive it in the rain (too lazy to wash it), so wet traction is not important. I have stock suspension. I would like a tire that will last around 10K, and will be quiet. After looking at some tests, these 3 tires look to be good choices.

Toyo T1R 245/45/16
Bridgestone RE11 225/50/16
Yokohama ADVAN Neova AD08 225/50/16

Please let me know what you think, and would recommend. I have not shopped for tires in several years.

Thanks, Adam

I'd go for the Bridgestone or Yokohama. Never liked the Toyo T1S or T1R. Even in the narrower size, they will have more grip. Scary how few choices there are in 16"...

Why not the Star Spec or Kumho XS?

Thanks for your input. Any particular reason you didn't like the T1R?

The Kumho and the Star Spec didn't do as well in a tire rack test as the other two. The noise and ride comfort categories are factors for me:

The test results have me leaning toward the Yokohama, which is also $17 cheaper per tire.

I've heard a lot of good things about star specs and nothing good from the toyos.

WAT

at 2k miles/yr you might as well just roll on RA1's or whatever...
im looking forward to RS3 test results and lifespan. they 'should' be faster than the other street tires, they're only 140 TW

Get the AD08, they are amazing tires and worlds better than the T1R. It's like comparing a Porsche GT3 RS to a 1990 Carrera. I'm not kidding either

My buddy has RS3's on his FD and he adores them. As for wear, the car's his weekend toy so I can't say anything about that.

Things I didn't like about both Toyos:
- biggest complaint = really soft side walls made things feel mushy and decreased steering feel and response
- overall dry grip wasn't that great (but wet grip was awesome)
- grip seemed to fall off at about 1/2 tread and got worse from there
- subjectively just didn't have much fun driving with them (your opinion could vary though)

If noise and ride comfort are important than definitely listen to the other reviews. I don't have much input along those lines. I've heard the Yokos are quite refined from some bimmer people - and Rich seems to like them too. :)

^in the summer months my rear 265s held over 500 rwhp through all of 2nd gear..... pretty damn impressive if you ask me ;)

The old T1S's were at least one of the lightest tires on the market, but the T1R's aren't. The T1S's did have a softer sidewall, which may be a good thing on your street wheels.

GoodfellaFD3S 01-06-11 08:43 AM

One other thing to mention, the T1R is old old technology and can't hold a candle to AD08, RE11, Z1 Star Spec. If you're a Toyo fan, then try out the R1R.

Thanks for all the input. This really helps a lot.

I bought my current set of T1R tires when they first came out. I have never felt that they were a "Great" tire. I had heard that the T1S was a pretty good tire, and that the successor T1R was supposed to be an improvement. I was a bit disappointed after buying them. As noted above, traction has really dropped off with age. At my last autocross, they were horrible. When I first got them, I was able to beat pretty much everyone that was running street tires (pats self on back) :). Now my times (and my co driver's times) seem to have dropped way off. Putting the tires on a timer really made me realize how bad they have gotten.

The Yokohama looks like a good choice. I have always liked Yokohama tires, except for the ES100, which was a piece of shit. I actually drove on them for a short time, and then sent them back as unusable.

Anyone like the RE11

Thanks, Adam

Adam, surf over to the Tire Rack, there is a literal shit-ton of great information on all the tires we're talking about. You can compare them down to every last parameter like weight, overall diameter, tread width etc. There are also are tons of reviews and ratings on wet/dry performance, road noise, etc.

IMO for a street car you can't go wrong with either of the three I mentioned before.

RXeckless 01-06-11 09:37 AM

I currently have the AD08 on my FD, great but wear quickly. Had the star spec's on my 8 and loved them as well.

Thanks for your input Rich. I really do appreciate it. I actually did a bunch of research there before starting this thread. I wanted to get some input from the rotary enthusiasts here as well. It has really helped to hear something from people I know (and respect) on this site.

Thanks again, Adam

^^Not a problem. I can tell you that you'll be *very* happy with the performance of the latest crop of top-tier performance rubber, no matter what you choose. The jumps in technology are very impressive.

Had RS2 on my 400 hp Mazdaspeed 6 and I love them. They even did pretty damn good on the snow. I can't even imaging how good the RS3 are then.

Mahjik 01-06-11 10:43 AM

I'd get the RE11 out of those choices. Advan's typically have very high wear compared to others in their respective tire classes. However, in a 225/50/16, I'd look at the following instead:

Hankook Ventus R-S3
Falken Azenis RT-615K

adam c 01-06-11 03:26 PM

Thanks everyone. Still leaning toward the Yoko's. My local tire shop quoted me $655 out the door for them.

I have the RE11's on my FB and love them. I can't say anything about their capabilities in a high-horsepower application, but they ride better than my stock 185/70R13 Bridgestone's and are much much quieter to boot. At my last autocross I was ~2 seconds off of a stock Gen 1 CTS-V (400hp version) (84 vs. 82 seconds).

HotRodMex 01-07-11 12:24 AM

Adam, you might want to give the Hankook RS-3s a shot (as Mahjik also suggested) if you want the best dry grip going.

Really, though, I don't think you can go wrong with any of the choices here. Anyone of of the SLO guys has tried just about each one. AD08s, RE11s, RS3s, Z1s, XS, all grippy good tires.

DAveFC3sNA 01-07-11 02:33 AM

i had RE01-R's its an old tire but they sure did grip well, now i have RS-2 and RS-3's and i can feel a difference at poconos and autoX and just normally driving on the street the RE01-Rs was way more grippy and had faster turning response compared to RS-2s,
i havent tried RS-3s yet being its winter the blizzacks are on right now

But a friend of mine has RE-11s and they grip really really well, the sizes i have are 215/45R16 front and 225/50R16 rears the RS-2's i notice have a softer/weaker sidewall compared to the RE01-R's

GoodfellaFD3S 01-07-11 07:07 AM

^^I'm not surprised. Nothing wrong with Hankooks, but you get what you pay for. Bridgestone>Hankook.

Mahjik 01-07-11 09:11 AM

A softer sidewall will absorb more road noise/vibration and transmit less of it to the chassis. While it does hamper "track performance", for someone looking for a more street compliant tire that is a bonus.

GoodfellaFD3S 01-07-11 10:33 AM

This is great data representing over 16 million miles of use:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/survey...ay.jsp?type=EP

The top three are clustered fairly close together with small differences between wet, dry, treadwear.

Notice the XS are middle of the pack, with poor wet performance.
