tires scraping wheel wells

I have just recently started autocrossing my '87 RX-7. It is a base model (non-turbo). I didn't want to burn up my street tires so I bought some Yokohama AVS Intermediates and mounted them on some used wheels I found. The actual tire size is slightly smaller in diameter than the tires that came on the turbo. Problem is that the wheels have a different offset than factory and barely jut out from the side of the wheel well.

In my first autocross on Sunday with my new tire/wheel package, the tire was hitting the fender on the lip that goes around the wheel well. It was only doing it under heavy braking and turning. Didn't matter whether was left or right. It didn't seem to be touching it hard, but it was enough to leave a small mark on the tires by the end of the day.

My RX has 88,000 miles and original suspension. Do you think it is worn out springs that maybe are giving too much in the corners? If so, what spring/shock combination do you guys like for a newbie autocrosser on a budget? Thanks for your help!

Maybe mod the wheel well lip or have the wells radiused,,,or
better springs is a good move, wouldn't hurt,.,.,.

Mark, Thanks for the suggestions. I am going to bolt the wheels on tomorrow and do a little around town driving just to see how severe my problem is. Hopefully I can fix with new springs/shocks and without beating out the fender.

I have since learned that it would have been cheaper to autocross on street tires and replace them as I burned them up!

No beating or pounding,,it takes the lip and bends it up and out
of the way, pretty simple to do,without big bucks,,,g luck
