Tire selection - 17x8, 17x9's? on FC3S
Hey,
I just got a set of FN01R-C's in bronze, Fronts - 17X8 +25 (i know it's a bit close to the fender) Rears - 17X9 +35 (do you think i need spacers for these?) What are your tire reccomendations? I'd like something nice and wide, but i don't want to risk rubbing. Thanks -Justin |
255/40r17 will fit fine in the rear, no you wont need spacers. I ran a 255/40r17 on a 9" wheel with a 41mm offset and it still fit ( barely..). As for the front, its going to be pretty close to the fender. Id suggest a 225/45r17 and see how that goes.

Cool thanks.

I'm having a bit of trouble finding the tires i need for the front, it seems as if not too many places sell high performance tires in the 225-40R17... Mostly only 225-45R17.
Would i possibly rub on the fronts with 225-45R17's on th front? What if i went with a 215-40-17's on the front? Is that too skinny for 17X8's? Or should i just roll the fender wells and throw some big stickies on them? -Justin |
I found some Toyo Proxes T1R
But they are a bit expensive.. I do run local auto-X once a month.. Do you think it's worth it for these for street tires? For a car running around 350WHP. I might just get some Azenis for the stock rims i have for Auto-X. What tire do you reccomend for good street driving? I had a set of Exta 711's on my old car, and they were not too bad, but weren't very sticky. -Justin |
You can get Ecsta 712s in that size, and they're a good tyre, IMO. More than adequate for street duties.

225/45/17 is the recommended size to be close to stock rolling diameter.
So is the 255/40/17 in the rears. This is the set-up I would go in your case with 8" front and 9" rears. This works well with cars running in the 300 to 350hp level, as the rears give a bit more grip for the elevated power levels. Those offset should work. It might get a little close to the front fenders, but unless the car is massively dropped, I think it's going to clear. Why are you stuck with the T1R and Kumho's? Kumho 712's are CRAP, IMO. Costco http://www.costco.com/ sells Bridgestone S03's for $205. They also have the Michelin Pilot Sports for $185. http://www.costco.com/Tires/SearchRe...cat=3962&MNo=0 That's for SHIPPED price to a Costco near you - do you have one nearby??? They might add a small "service" fee, but for those prices even Tire Rack can't touch it once you add shipping... -Ted |
Cool,
So running the 225/45R17 in the front opens up a lot more tires i can choose rather then 225/40R17s. I'm considering the Falken Azenis RT-615. In your opinion, is 255/40R17 the widest i can fit on a 9" wide wheel? Thanks. Justin |
Oh, i don't have a costco down here.. Only discount tires.
Also, have you had any experience with the Nitto NT 555? -Justin |
I decided on Falken FK-451's
They seemed to offer what i need for street use for a decent price. Later down the road, i may invest in a set of real stickies for auto-x. Thanks for your help -Justin |

They are a great lower priced tire that has "decent" performance, but its nothing spectacular. Straight line grip isnt the best. I hear good things about the T1-R, and have a friend that just got them mounted, so give me a few days and I can get a review from him. The S03s area great tire , but are pretty damn heavy. Also, in my 1st post I did suggest 225/45, not 225/40.. not sure if you misread or why you were looking into the 225/40s. |
Yeah i misread your first post..
I got a set of: 225/45R17's 255/40R17's Falken FK451's. Got them for a total of 450 shipped. Thanks for the help. -Justin |
You can go wider on a 9" rim, but you're going to get a big stagger from the 225's up front.
No sense. :( Stay away from the Nitto NT-555's; they are crap - just like the Kumho 712's. The Falkens should be a decent tire. -Ted |
Interesting opinions. My bro has 712s on his FC and they grip just fine. We aren't talking 300hp though, so maybe that's the difference. Doesn't really matter anyway.
It's always good to hear others informed opinions. |
I have kumho mx. 225/45/17 front, 255/40/17 rear on the same wheels as you, same color, same offset. I like them a lots.

It's always good to hear others informed opinions. I've been on... Bridgestone RE-71 (discontinued) Toyo RA-1 B.F. Goodrich Comp T/A (discontinued) Dunlop SP8000 Nitto NT-555R drag radials Those are all "decent" tires in my book. Goodyear GT+4 (discontinued) B.F. Goodrich VR+4 (discontinued) Yokohama Parada Spec-1 (discontinued) Kumho 712 These scare the hell out of me. All of these tires were on FC's as daily drivers. I'm getting a set of Bridgestone S03 PP's soon! :) -Ted |
I really know i should've invested more into the tires, because i know i might be unhappy with them, but we'll give them a shot. Just like a paint job, you get what you pay for when you buy tires..
I think next im going to get some stickies for my stock wheels for the auto-x.. Thanks -Justin |
I've really only used the 712s for daily driving situations in a front driver, but I do drive this particular car very hard! They're 15" though, which might make a difference.
For performance I've used, Yoko A509s and Falken Azenis RT-215s on a 173rwkw SA22C street and circuit, and on an FC Nankang something-or-others entirely street, not hard miles. Like I said though, the 712s are on my brothers FC with is stockish power wise, and he hasn't complained so far. I wouldn't use them at a track or anything, but for street duties I'd consider them fine. My opinion is based on having used them, without being able to compare to a wide variety of others, unlike you. So, we're coming from different angles if you know what I mean. |

The B.F. Goodrich Comp T/A was in a "grandma" 175/70/13 size on my stock CRX, and there were not many cars which could keep up with the pesky car up on the mountain. :D For performance I've used, Yoko A509s and Falken Azenis RT-215s on a 173rwkw SA22C street and circuit, and on an FC Nankang something-or-others entirely street, not hard miles. I'm not a big fan of the AVSi's, so I'd probably be disappointed with the 509's. Man! You need to get some top tier tires! About everything you've listed is a "middle" performer in my book, and it makes a big difference once you've driven a car with a top-of-the-line performance tire! :) -Ted |
I would agree after having 275's that running a 225 up front is a bit much for track use. 255 and 225 is better....All depends on your hp level.
As I said before, if your running 400plus whp you need 265-275 or the hp is pointless.... |

I have 225/45/R17 on all 4 wheels, I am looking on upgrading my suspension, with either racing beat or eibach springs, with the lowered car does anyone know if I might have rubbing?
