Roll cage q's
Well I figure this section is probably the most suited for a roll cage thread, if not I apologize.
I already know how I'm going to set up the cage, I just would like to get some opinions on tube sizing. I did some searching on google and saw that 1.5" DOM tubing with .120" wall is quite common, would this be fine to use? Also, for the base plates to weld the tubing onto, what is a good metal and thickness to use? And finally, are there any small things that I would need to know to do when having one made/installed? I would like to get it done properly the first time so I don't have to worry about it. Thanks for any information. |
What sanction are you planning on racing in? It would be best to look at their rules for safety equipment to make sure your cage will comply. i.e. it would be a shame to go through all that time, money and effort only to have something which wouldn't be legal for what you need.

Usually there are no sanctioning bodies, just open track days. I don't really plan to run SCCA or anything specific.

There is a roll cage picture sticky thread in the Race Car section on this site, look there. If this is a track car, you should build the cage to NASA or SCCA specs (IT for SCCA or PT for NASA minimum), both are available free online in the rule book. The idea for a roll cage is for it to protect you, so best to build to minimum standards. If you haven't built a cage before, you might consider having it done - they are not cheap though. Kirk Racing also may offer a weld in roll cage that is already pre-bent. Google them.
