Question: Best setup for rough roads?

Just bought mint cond 1984 gsl-se with all original equipment. I want it to stay in mint cond. The problem is I live in Brooklyn NY where the streets are 3rd world or worse. It seems every 5-15 feet there is another pot hole, deep depression, or other hazard. To protect the car and for handling, what is the best setup or combonation of springs, shocks, suspensions, tires, or whatever else?

Sounds like stock or stock replacement is the right thing for you. I had a car recently with Monroe Sensa-Trac shocks and struts that did quite well in mixed smooth and rough road driving. If you want to keep the car from bottoming don't lower the car and stay with stock sized tires.

As a long time NYC (manhattan, queens, brooklyn, and long island) I know what you mean. Here are some suggestions for you:
- wheels: don't go too big on the wheels. generally, the more side wall you have the more it helps to absorb the shocks from our crappy roads.
- shocks: get something adjustable that fits your budget. KYBs are probably pretty good.
- springs: it's up to you whether you want to try and do springs. if you do, don't drop it down too low and don't get something too stiff.
- replace the upper rubber bushings at the top of the shock. this will help quiet down bumps and insulate hard jolts through the body/wheel.
