new wheels and poor handling...
 

Ok I just got some new volks (pics tomorrow I hope) and took it for a quick drive and the rear felt really bad. Is this to be expected until I get an alignment? It feels squirrelly currently. Kind of suprised me that it was such a big difference. Going from stock to 265/40/17 in the rear and 245/40/17 in the front make that large of a difference? I plan on using the Pettit specs but wanted to make sure there might not be something else wrong.

if you have some camber in your suspension, it'll take some time for the new ones to wear to the angle. it's always gotten better anytime i've had that problem. get a good alignment and let the tires wear a little, and you should be okay

the alignment is prolly way off, reducing your rear contact patch and making the car tail happy

Brand new tires, right?
They need to be "broken in".
Brand new tires have all kinds of mold release agents and rubber protectants sprayed on for shipping; this keeps the tire rubber from oxidizing.
On top of that, full tread tires are a bit unnerving to drive on when brand new.

I once drove Laguna Seca on 2-day old SP8000s in the rear.

Interesting, to say the least.

The only word I can use to describe it most accurately would be "squirmy."

They won't necessarily break loose, but they feel like it has huge slip angle.
