KYB GR-2 on the FD...opinions?
 

Hey everybody -

I've got a friend that I'm going to be helping out with his FD. He's an older fella, and not into teeth-jarring suspension and deafening exhaust :).

I'm fixing to look at his car tomorrow. He's got 112,000 miles on the car, and is the original owner (original engine too!). I have a feeling that the stock shocks are likely blown or severely worn, and I'm looking at various options for him.

I've been able to gather information on pretty much every shock setup for the FD, save for the KYB GR-2. I know that the GR-2 are supposed to be kinda bobo on the FC, but I don't know about the FD. The price is definitely reasonable, but I don't want to save money with junky shocks and have them blow out, work poorly, fit poorly, etc.

Any thoughts?

KYB generally makes quality stuff but I know nothing about what they offer for the FD.

Any more opinions? Just wondering if anyone has any experience with these shocks on the FD...

The GR-2 is a not so good of a shock. I have used this shock many times and have always had them prematurely fail. For a good OE replacement non adjustable shock I would highly suggest the Tokico HP. I think this is the best OEM replacement.

The KYB are super cheap but I would not recommend them. The HP has been a much more reliable product for us.

I would look at Tokicos, Bilsteins, or Konis. They are all fairly reliable and the Tokicos and Konis are adjustable to achieve very near to stock ride quality.

BTW, you really shouldn't assume that the shocks are worn out. Howard Coleman on the board has dyno tested many FD OEM shocks and hasn't found changes in their valving due to mileage. If the OEM shocks aren't leaking or obviously blown, there's a good chance they are fine.

Oh ya Bilstein. I like them a lot too. They are good OE replacement. And what ryn said. hehe.

Thanks for the input! I know on an FC if the shocks are over 100,000 miles, the rears are DEFINITELY gone. Might not be the case on the FD :).

Good deal - I just wanted to know if the same story held for the GR-2's on the FD. Seems to be the case.

I didn't think Tokico made the blue HD shocks for the FD? I've only seen the adjustable Illumina's.
