Are Koni's supposed to be noisy?

I recently installed some used Koni yellows, single adjustable, revalved for stiffer springs on my FD. I'm running Ground Control coil-over kit with 2.25", 500 front, 400 rear springs. Anyway, the rear shocks are noisy. When driving, you can hear a swishy/swooshing noise as the shocks compress and rebound. They do feel great however. Lot better ride than the stock R1 shocks which rattled my fillings.

Thanks,
Ken

It's normal. I don't hear it except at low speeds when the suspension is going over big undulations. It's the unmistakable sound that you describe but it's only at parking lot speeds.

The squeaking sound could also be a sign that the input shaft seal is not lubricating correctly or is possibly damaged and/or dried out.

I had a set of Koni yellows's revalved at Trucehoice some years ago which made the exact sound you describe. The Tech told me there might be some air that got in during rebuild however not to worry. I logged in over 60 track days with the Koni's with no apparent problems.

Jack, did the sound ever go away? I can hear the shocks even on the freeway. They do feel great however, less jarring than the R1 shocks.

I have koni's as well, installed by their previous owner. I dont hear any sounds on the highway, but that could be simply because I'm not listening hard enough. The only time its noticable is when I go over a speed bump, but that's it. I'll listen on the freeway when I get my FD back from the shop.

Well, I've been daily driving the R1 for the last 2 days in 80-90 degree weather. After 200 miles, the noise does seem to have diminished. I can still hear it with the windows up and the radio off though. It does seem tolerable now...

I've got Koni's and the swishing/swooshing IS normal.

If you take off the plastic finishing covers of the shock tower that sound will be readily heard.

All is normal. Just go out and have fun.

David
