Hi there,

I have an '86 Mazda Rx7 GXL and I'm replacing my stock aas with a set of Tein Super Street Coilovers. I'm going to be using OEM shock mounts instead of upgrading to the pillowball upper mounts, but I'm not sure of exactly what parts I'll need to replace. I called Ray Crowe at Malloy Mazda and he said that there are several parts available pertaining to the spring mounts.

I found the rx-7 parts diagram here: http://www.mazdamotorsports.com/pdfs...rx7/0191_1.PDF page 137. Do I only need the Rear-Damper Mounting Plate and spring-rear damper sheet? Parts no. FB01-28-050 and FB01-28-040 respectively. Would I need any bushings or stoppers?

Another option is to order the Strut Mounts from rockauto.com. Their SPICER/RAYBESTOS Part # 5201259 front upper mount and SPICER/RAYBESTOS Part # 5201258 rear upper mounts are half the price of what Ray Crowe offers, but the adage you get what you pay for comes to mind.

why arent you using the pillowballs?
its an aweful lot easier... (and better)

Well, a) there's the obvious price difference. I'm not planning on taking this on the track or anything (though, that's not to say I never will). The cheapest set I could find was from jbkperformance.com for $350 for a set of fronts and backs... at least I think that's for all 4, if not then double that price.

b) I've heard that the pillowball upper mounts made for a noisy and uncomfortable ride. Once again, not a huge turnoff for me, but i wanted to consider all options.

I have a nasty habit of spending more money than is necessary on this car... given the option again, I'd forego the coilovers and just get a set of regular struts and springs.

Does anyone else feel the pillowball upper mounts would be a better choice?

if its just a street car, and you're just lowering it for looks, than it really doesnt matter.
use the cash saved for a rear camber adjuster.
