Brake pads hang over the end of the rotor.

My fd has a strange problem. I rebuilt my calipers a few months back and noticed that my brake pads had a lip on them from where they haven't been touching the rotor. Didn't think much of it. Ordered new pads, brake lines etc assuming the pads that were on it were poorly made.
Got new hawk pads, went to install them, and noticed that once they were bolted up the pads were hanging off the end of the rotor maybe 2mm. Being that this is my 4th fd I thought maybe the rotors were not right so I grabbed a old stock one that I had laying around and bolted that up. still the same result. And I know those rotors worked properly. I even tried flipping the pads around, same thing. I'm at a loss! I've searched and came back with no help. Any ideas guys? I looked up how big the stock rotors are, 294mm. The rotors I have are the exact same size.
I am stumped. The only thing I can think is that the brake pads I bought aren't made correctly. But I highly highly doubt that. If that was the case, then the other stock pads that were on it were also made wrong which doesn't seem likely. I guess I have no choice but to run them like that unless someone else has any ideas. |
Pull out both pads and see if the RD (Radial Depth) or Annulus of the pads' compound mold is the same as inner and outer on both sides. If a pad is not made right, its pretty visible.
If they all look the same, and measure out the same, it is an installation issue. |
Compare the Hawk pads to stock pads (if you have any around). Aftermarket pads sometimes do not control the location of the pad on the backing plate well.
When I had stock calipers, I saw this issue with an occasional set of race pads from a different vendor, although not as far off as yours appear to be. I don't think 3rd gen RX7 brake pads are a top volume product for any vendor, so they probably don't get much attention from the quality dept. I wouldn't worry about it too much, unless it makes the brakes noisy. |
and make sure you push in on the caliper before tightening the mount bolts, but i doubt it would correct that much. problem looks to be in the pads but unless you need all the braking you can get i wouldn't worry about it.

The stock pads were like that too which is what is so strange.

I can tell you that the Hawks pad were like that when I installed a set for my friend and it made a hell of a noise. What I did was simply grind them off and slap it back on. Noise went away and braking abilities were much better than stock.

I just did mine 2 weeks ago, power slot rotors with hawk HPS pads and thought what did I do wrong. Tried the same things, over hang with stock rotors (the power slots are the same size as stock rotors) compared pads and the hawks are bigger then my old stock pads, the inner part of the pad was in the same position on the rotor. Think of it as a bonus you are using all the rotor surface area.
