Best place to get Upgraded Rotors (FD)
 

Hey guys, I need to replace my brake rotors and I want to get either cross-drilled or slottod (or both) for my FD.

Does anyone know a place with good prices?
The cheapest I have seen is the Brembo cross-drilled/slotted rotors at Rx7store for $90 a piece.

None of those rotors are "upgrades", consider them to be stock replacements. In fact, the cross-drilled will have reduced heat capacity compared to solid discs and WILL crack under very hard driving. Just pointing that out....

so rynberg what do you recommend we do to "upgrade" our rotors? i'd like to replace mine with better ones but if they wont give me any better performance then theres no reason.

"rynberg" is referring to track use. If you only drive your FD on the street, no worries, the Brembos should be just fine.

There isn't some magical formula or anything. A rotor's performance is based on how well it dissipates heat. The only way to "upgrade" over the stock rotors is to replace them with bigger rotors.

"Upgrading" rotors is only necessary if you are regularly fading them -- on the track. You will not improve over the stock rotors for street driving, no matter what you buy. In the end, it's the tire that is stopping the car.

All that said, if you never track the car, just get whatever you want. They'll work the same as just about anything else, although I bet the x-drilled rotors have a shorter lifespan, even on the street.

That set of 4 rotors, 4 sets of pads and steel lines at less then $500 with shipping included sounds nice.

But if there is no performance gain... :o:

Seriously, you'd have to go with a big brake kit if you want a performance gain, and unless you're making big power, hence the need to stop, what's the point? For a street driven car, these are fine and surely cheaper than replacing with OEM.

I drive my car on track also ;)

Has anyone done business with that turboimport.com place? I need to get a brake job done and that seems like a good price. I have never heard of them though, and don't like ordering from places that I haven't heard of:)

I'm looking for a kit that the rotors are only x-drilled and they are shiny (bling-bling). I really only want them cuz the wheels I like show off a lot of rotor. Anyone can help?




Performance-shamorfance....I wanna look good

Mazdaspeed Motorsports Development sells '99 FD Type RS brake rotors/calipers. This is a true upgrade from the US spec FD. You must be a member of the Mazda Motorsports team to order. Front rotors are 1.25 inches thick. Both fr/rr rotors are 330 mm (13 inches) in diameter. Front calipers are thicker. Much better brakes than the wimpy US spec versions. You WILL NEED at least 17-inch wheels to fit over the brakes. Front wheel caliper clearance will need at least 40 mm. They look totally stock peaking from behind thin-spoked wheels like my Integrals--which I guess they are for a '99 FD LOL :)

EBAY, brembo rotors on ebay are the best deal I have seen. I got mine $220 for a full set. Also I have seen some other brand for cheaper on EBAY.

You can also go to a higher friction pad like EBC Greenstuff without increasing the size of the rotor. Higher friction = greater heat so this is where the cross drilling can help.

More important than the cross drilling for heat dissapation is getting good airflow onto the brakes (if you are track driving the car) so look into body kit/modifications you can do to vent air into the brakes.
