Anyone use aluminum bushings?
Does anyone use them on thier FDs? Just kind of curious, if so how do you like them, do you do any street driving (minimal if you do Im guessing) hows the car feel on a track, and where did you get them if you have them.

No one makes aluminum bushings that I am aware of. Aluminum isn't slippery or hard, and it galls.

unusual i have seen solid aluminum bushing in ALOT of cars opera sports S2k uses ALL alumium bushings and i have seen them around for the FC as well?? if nobody fabs them yet thats insane...and i guess i should get on that..>LOL until then....UHMW AKA Delrin....is ur next option....

No one even makes polyurethane bushings for the FD. And I guess I should qualify that I think aluminum is a poor choice of materials for a suspension bushing (but may be acceptable in other spots that don't move as much).

Wanklin's super-pro bushings are polyurathane I believe... he's already selling rears, motor mounts, diff, etc.
Alluminum bushings sounds like the silliest thing i've ever heard of... no matter which tuner is doing it... why would you do that?! |
well a car of this calibre uses aluminum bushings all around....i havent found a problem in my last FC....hence we are building another full set for this current T2....6061 is VERY durable..solid aluminum mounts give NO PLAY watsoever in the suspention (bushings still jostle around on corning loads..SO only the components taht are supposed to move MOVE because the bushings are solid.....it hacks it very well AS LONG AS everything is is properly pressfitted and cut right IF holes are too big for bolts/studs.....YES it will wallow out and create play and probably break, hence unless u have accurate machine tools and a lathe, mill, etc... dont try to fab this stuff up because u run the risk of damaging components and burning monies down the drain.(not saying its impossible just risky) now UHMW is fabulous though feels like concrete with a plastic consistantcy and provides very very little play.....LOL
give and take: give: give up ride quality take: solid suspention feel and ridgity... i consider needle bearings as the tippity top of the "bushing line" needlebearing aluminum UHMW(can be tied in second with aluminum) polyurithane rubber.... blownrubber...LOL now with needle bearings whats the maintanance on them? |
--MAstermind--, I can't imagine a solid aluminum sleeve bushing working well for any kind of suspension bushing. You would have all kinds of friction and binding problems. They might even sieze when hot. Are you really using aluminum sleeve bearings as suspension bushings? What material is used for the center pins?
Also, you forgot spherical bearings in your list. For many suspension bushings, these are the only choice, since the others lack (mostly) free rotation about all 3 axes. Most formula cars use spherical bearings (in the form of rod ends) extensively. -Max |
so many people use aluminum, its not that big of deal. they dont where out bad and are you going to drive on them for 100K? prolly not. the noise is a factor for a daily driven vehicle.

I think people are confusing bushings with mounts. I mean you can run alum engine/trans. mounts or even subframe mounts but I can't see alum on alum bushings working at all.

You can click my sig for info links Aluminum bushings make no sense. If you are dead set on a zero-absorbtion, tooth rattling setup you can always go with aftermarket pillowballs. |
