99 spec rims vs. stock rims - FD

Hello guys (and girls if any),

I appologize if this has been discussed extensively already.

I have a 94 FD with the stock rims and I am contemplating the 99 spec rims that are Front: 17" X 8
Rear: 17" X 8.5

The idea is to get a tiny bit wider tires in the back (maybe Front 235 Rear 255 overall) to get better cornering. I like the idea of the OEM look but I have not found much details about these wheels vs. the stock rims.

Do you guys know the main difference between these ones and the stock ones, weight, size, etc?

Any feedback is appreciated.

Thanks,

Joel

I dont know a whole lot about the specs of each, but i love my 99 spec wheels. They look a lot better imo, give you a little more tire in the back, and i believe they weigh pretty much the same as the OEM 16". Im running some spacers front and back and they look pretty aggressive.

I see, thanks for the feedback. You wouldn't have any pics by any chance (how wide are the spacers btw)?

well my job has forced me to a new area 3.5 hours from home. i may get some pics for you someday, lol.

this is the stock fitment with the 99 spec rims, i have 20mm spacers for my rear and 15mm for front that i'm too lazy to install, i could show you what it looks like with the spacers on in a week, perhaps.

I have owned the 99 spec rims before changing to an aftermarket rim. They are very light and handle great.

The only issue I had was I wanted a bit more flush. Perhaps spacers would have done that, I don't know.

That is some sweet looking FD, I like the idea of keeping it close to OEM look while still having some nice goodies.

Anyone could tell me how much the front and rear wheels weight? I have sen so many post on their weight, some saying they are heavier, some lighter, this way I would do the same on my stock wheel and post the data for those looking for them in the future.

Thanks for your feedback guys.

Joel

I think they are both near the same weight while the 99 spec does weigh slightly more. After all it is a 17inch rim compared to a 16rim.

I think the difference was around 2lbs but its been a while since I compared.

Sweet 3rd gen I wish I could afford one so bad..... maybe someday...

Fronts were around 8kg, rears a little more - not helped by the resolution of the bathroom scales.

If buying second-hand, good idea to get them spun up and indicated, can be a few nasty surprises, the BBS ones should be better in that regard, although there is a minor weight penalty.

15mm front, 20mm rear

Car looks great...what spacers did you wind up going with?

Julian 10-14-10 07:42 PM

Do a search on here. I stated SR BBS wheel weights on here once.

Zhe, big improvement :icon_tup:

Anyone running S-R wheels or 99 spec wheels should consider doing the same..... my dad just picked up a set of these same wheels (99), not sure if I can convince his old azz to try spacers or not

Yes, 99 wheels look sooooo much better with spacers. sunken in wheel look = early 90s look

Zhe, what brand spacers did you get? were you happy with the quality? I'm looking to source them for a customer.

thanks :icon_tup:

oh, i got the ichibas as well
and idk if its me failing to put them on properly, but the nuts that came with the spacers aren't that great, 3 / 20's teeth was just ripped to shreds as i was torquing

GoodfellaFD3S 11-02-10 01:39 PM

^^does it provide a torque spec? you ruined the nuts, or ruined your oem studs?

Supernaut 11-02-10 02:23 PM

Nice Zhe. I'll probably be doing the same.

mrb63083 11-03-10 09:57 AM

Wow..I need to get spacers for my stock wheels! Well, at least until I can afford aftermarket wheels. ;)

Anybody have a link for the spacers in the aforementioned?

ruined the nuts, it did not provide a torque spec, i just assumed it be the same as our wheels, the nuts felt really soft

I have the 99s... specs on my site for the rears. I weighed them with a super precise scale.

joel_rx7 11-07-10 12:29 AM

RPF01 Enkeis are 15.5 to 16 lbs, if you're saying they weigh {(16.90 ; 16.84 ;17.06 ;17.06 lbs)} they're not too far off. But the 99' spec cost more than the Enkeis...hard choice.

Thanks for the data.
