89 TII - Widest tire on stock 16" rim?
 

Basically I am assuming that 225's are the widest to go with up front on the stock 16's and 245's should be about the widest in the rear? Has anyone gone with 255's in the rear on the stock TII rims?

i think 245 is max

with 245 there might even be a lot of sidewall flex and roll when you corner hard

on '89 T2 rims (16x7) I'm running 225/50/16's up front and 245/45/16's out back with no problems. I have coilovers from K2RD.com. I had the car really slammed in the front and when I stepped up from 205's to 225's I had to raise the car as the tires were rubbing on the threaded cup on the coilovers. However it is still pretty low.

Unless you are making 300hp+ I would just run 225/16's all the way around.

Well I do plan on at least 350hp, so tires will be a major concern for me. So 225's up front, and 245's in the rear. If I go with a mild drop (.75-1") should the 245's still be ok without any rubbing on the strut perch? Could I go with 255's on the rear if I modiy the strut perch? Or is that too wide for the stock rim to run safely?

You're going to screw up the handling even if you find some idiot that will mount a 255 on a 7" wide rim.

You CAN mount 255s on 16x7 wheels. I have mounted some BFG 255s on 16x7 mustang pony wheels. So it can be done but it will buldge and cornering will suck. 255 is too much tire for a 7in rim. If you want wider grip for straigh line performance and really like the wide look than get the 255s. The owner of the mustang wanted that exactly for drag racing and it worked well for him since he was running a paxton on his 5.0 and was in the 450HP range with instant low end torque. Just my .02

Every tire manufacture has their own recommended tire sizes for a particular tire width.&nbsp I don't know of ANY leading tire manufacturer that would allow a 255 wide tire on a 7" wide rim.&nbsp This is for daily driving street use - the safety factor gets throw out the window if you're going to insist on this.

Geez people, buy some cheap ass rims if you want wide tread tires.&nbsp This is no excuse.&nbsp You can find cheap 8" wide rims for like $100 - $200 per rim, which is cheap insurance versus a tire failure.

Regarding the "idiot" limit of 255 as mentioned above, I would like to lower that to 245 on the stock rims. Having mounted GNX7's tires, I felt like an idiot. Especially after all the grunting and seeing the sidewall bow out at least 3/4" on either side of the rim when mounted. Shatty for handling but does have more rubber on the road, which is all he was looking for.

So running a 245 is ok on stock rims. What series sidewall would work best for a 245?

RX-Heven- hey.....! The first tire was a major PITA however the second one went on piece of cake. :) Lower the idiot limit...... sheesh!

I run 225/50/16's up front and 245/45/16's out back. Yokohama AVS I's $57-60 each!!!!!! I am king of budget and no plans on dropping $800 on rims anytime soon. If I do I'll get 18x10's up front and 18x12's out back from CCW for $2K with a TriPoint widebody kit and do it right.

I have 400ft/lbs+ torque and wanted a bigger tire out back and even on low boost the rears are fighting for traction. Handling isn't tossed out the window vs. running 225/16's all the way around but I'm sure it has been slightly compromised.

Why not run FD rims (16x8) all the way around which will allow you run 255/16's safely out back with no fender mods and then you need a hubcentric spacer up front as they will rub the springs no matter what size tire you run without them. Get coilover suspension as well all the way around as up front it allows more tire safely due to a decrease in spring diameter vs. stock.
My car is pretty much as low as it will go and I can go full lock up front with no rubbing one side and the other side 90% lock on the steering. Rears have plenty of clearance.

I checked tirerack and they don't have any AVS-Int in 16's... is therer anywhere else can you get them for that price?

The Yoko's were listed on there a few days ago. They are on closeout special and are listed in magazine ads.

I would suggest giving them a call. They have them I'm sure.... just in limited quantities.

i have 255/50/16 bfg on my fc , but the sstocks rims came off a fd, and there 16

Too big for fronts.
Might fit in back, but I wouldn't run anything wider than a 245 (45/16) on the rears on an 8" wide rim.
