225/50 fronts... 245/45 rear (stock rims)
 

thinking about running this setup. Does anyone currently have this setup? If so, I would like some pics if at all possible so I can get a visual of what it looks like. Also, how does the setup perform? I currently have 225/50's on all corners. Thanks...

No pics - the difference is not that noticable... with the wider wheel wells in the back, they seems to fit properly (as far as the look goes) - you wouldn't think anything of it unless you looked real close.

As far as the performance goes, there is definitely more understeer - not a lot, but enough to notice. You can use that to your advantage by getting onto the gas a bit sooner as you're coming out of a corner. The rear will still scoot out on you if you lift off mid corner, but getting on the gas (a little) causes more of a push than a rotate (as compared to 225 on all sides).

Definitely a good street setup... still a good track setup once you get used to it.

cool.... my only problem is that the two tires I want most don't come in a 245/45 :( I want the Kumho Ecsta MX's or the BF Goodrich T/A KD's. I know there not the best tires but they have the look that I like. Is it possible to special order a size from a tire manufacturer?

The BFG G-force T/A KDW comes in 245/45/16. They're not on the same performance level as the KDs, but they have the look.

Speaking of which, what have you heard about the KDs? I believe that they are among the best tires you can buy.

I've never heard of anyone getting custom size tires, well unless your Dodge, Chevy, Porsche, etc.

I have the KDWs. They are pretty good. Good wet/dry traction.
I would've bought the KD's, but I gotta drive my car in the rain sometimes.

If you're going to compete at all, you'll want to stick with either the 225/50 or the 245/45 all-around. The steering response will be much crisper with the all-around setup and you won't have the tire rotation problem that happens when you run offset. I'd recommend the 245/45's just because the extra rubber feels much better for cornering. :)

I'm not using looks as a base for a decision but I do consider it. I'm trying to find a decent looking tire that performs well. I like the big square patchy look. I don't get into the whole blade like tread every company has out now. So I ask... why would I buy tires to put on my car that look ugly to me?

Becuase they perform better than any other tire out there.

Because no one will see them when you don't have to slow down for corners.

Seriously, the T/A KD (not the KDW) are very good tires. If you like their look :rolleyes:, then go with them. They are pretty expensive though.

The Pirelli P-Zero Rossa has a red "Pirelli" logo on the side - maybe that'll trip your trigger.

You guys are crazy! I'm just buying tires to use on the streets for city driving. I do want better traction in the rear for those times that I get the urge to stomp on the gas or to show one of the local ricer's who's boss. I by no means had plans for autocrossing. So cornering ability doesn't mean anything to me. If I were autocrossing that would be a different story. In a race situation I wouldn't give a flying flip what they looked like on my car. And neither would anybody else. As long as it performed. Also, if I were autocrossing.... why would I pick any of these tires? Only one or two would be suitable for track use anyway. :rolleyes:

So sad that you don't care for what makes the FD so great.....if all you care about it is straightline acceleration, why didn't you just buy a Z28 and spray? Cheaper and more reliable, that's for sure.

I didn't know it was a rule that when you own an fd you must race it every time you drive it. Even on city streets going to and from the supermarket. So basically I should buy a set of really nice racing tires so I can go 50+ mph around turns when I'm driving around the city. Since the fd is so good at cornering it would be a shame to waste it's ability's when driving around the streets..... I'm only buying tires to use on the streets for daily driving to and from work. Forgive me if the tires I choose lack cornering ability. And I never said that I only cared about straight line acceleration. With all this I'm getting 225/50's all around, I'll rotate them regularly like I should, and when I get all my money saved up for the rims I want from rishie, then I'll worry about cornering ability, and sidewall strenght and what not.

that's where I started. And looks isn't everything to me. I just consider it when choosing a tire that's all.

n2trbl you obvisouly are not in need of a high performance tire for your intended use. Some things I would keep in mind is that no matter what tire you choose a 245/45/16 will always put more rubber on the road than the stock size and mounting four of the same allows you to rotate tires at will to prolong their life.

For street use I am currently on Continental Contact Sports that Tire Rack was selling for under $100 each. They have good grip wet and dry, run quiet and wear well. I agree with you that I don't need a true high performance tire to go to the grocery store. That's why I keep the race tires in the garage to bring with me on race day :)
