17" Wheel Help!
 

I've searched and searched but cannot some up with a simple answer to the following question:

I want to put 275/40/17's on the rear of my new FD with Nitto Drag Radials on 17x9 rims.

I plan on running Toyo T1S's also on the rear for daily driving.

Right now I'm unsure of the rim size, I won't have the car physically in hand for 2 more weeks but I believe they are Enkei 17x8's with 235 series tires all the way around.

What size do I need in the front and whats the widest I can go without any major work or it sticking out the side of the car?

The car will be daily driven, screwed around with on a road course, and lightly drag raced. I'm going with the Nitto's as my 70 percent tire due to power, the Toyo's in the rear for trips and when its crappy out.

275/40 is too big for a 17x9 wheel. That's what I have on 17x10 Fikses in the rear. Try 255/40.

For the 17x8s, run 235/45.

17x9 too small for a 275?

Any other reason besides tire fitment?

The Camaro/Firebird for years came with 275/40/17's on 17x9's. Its what I ran on my old car, 17x9 SS Rim with 275/40/17 Nitto DR's.

Unless you are making over the stock HP levels you don't need tires that big they'll just slow you down.

Search the forums here for offsets but you can fit 17x9/17x10 rims with 275s in the stock wheel wells just fine.

Also if you're going to be drag racing you may want to consider getting some really light/wide 16" rims to put the DRs on.

I'm not saying the 275 won't physically fit, but if you're going to go that big, why not go with a wider wheel?

I'll be at about 340rwhp and near 500rwhp on spray, and in the fall moving upto about 450rwhp NA and 550 on spray.

Sorry I misunderstood your statement, I never really did consider 17x10 because that size didn't fit an F-body.

I ran Nitto's at 620rwhp on my Camaro and had great luck with them, hoping for the same here.

I'll have the Nitto's on the back for most everyday driving and a set of T1S's for trips and questionable weather. I drove my DR's on the Camaro ran or shine but it was only 8 miles to work and back, now its 36 and thats a bit more iffy to do.

I wouldn't drive a FD in wet with DRs on it even 2 miles. From your HP numbers it sounds like you have LS1/LS6 in a FD? If so congrats on getting it done, should make for a fun ride.

You can actually fit 10.5" rims with 285s on a 38-43 (ymmv, talk to your wheel shop for exact offset) offset without modification except maybe going to aftermarket trailing arms that add a bit of clearance. If you want to go to 295s you'll need to roll the fender.

I did alot of searching on the site and its all foreign to me :) F-bodies you put in 275/40/17 or 335 series on 17x11's and you were done. The hard part was figuiring clearances for 15" wheels but even then the choices were simple.

I started reading here and just got lost, especially with the offsets.

And yes, its an LS1 conversion. Why the no rain on DR's? I've driven Nitto's in the rain quite a bit, wouldn't try it on BFG's, but I've had good luck with Nitto's.

I wouldn't do the drive to work and back with them now, but before we moved I'd just take surface streets if it was raining but now I'm freeway only to get home.

I guess with the LS1 your power curve might be a bit more gentle but with the rotary when the boost kicks in on DRs you'd have a hard time not breaking the rear end free and its difficult at times to make sure you stay completely off boost (unless you are single/non-seq).

On the Camaro I had a twin turbo LS1, over 500ftlbs at 2900rpm, but it just stuck really well for some reason.

yeah nittos are fine in the rain just don't go nutts..bfgs seem to loose tread a lot faster and quickly become a hazard over 60mph
