SAFCII -28% and still in 11's on AFR???

I only have a couple of mods:
Bonez Downpipe.
Bonez hi-flow cat (Im in california... I need it sadly)
Racing Beat FCD
.... thats about it when it comes to what im going to be talking about...
I have stock boost levels for an S4 Turbo II!!!!!

I have a SAFC II and a PLX Wideband. My dyno graph looks like this:
http://sirelfking.home.comcast.net/dyno/dynomed.jpg

I have been trying to lean out my mixture a bit since I was dipping so low in the AFR's but it looks like my adjustments are not doing much....

I have a Defi EGT gague to try and have something to compare to also...
My settings right now. I have it wired up to the pressure sensor. My EGt's have never gone above 1350. So from what I read thats not that bad.. I could have read some crap of course.

low - 5%
hi - 45%

4.6k = -7% AFR = 11.1
5.2k = -13% AFR = 10.2
5.6k = -19% AFR = 11.4
6.2k = -28% AFR = 11.2
7k = 8% AFR = 11.4

My turbo has been glowing red recently with just light boosting which to me tells me it is way too rich. I talked to some people they claim is too lean. I read a lot of places that it was too rich.

To me TOO RICH makes sense, simply unburned fuel catching and igniting on its way out. But its weird that my EGT's don't change as I adjust the SAFC and the wideband has changed a bit.. Im now hanging around the low 10's high 11's. Never seeing 12's and I havent had too much luck searching for info on Turbo II's. Only NA's have I found some info about...

I was hoping someone might be able to hopefully point out what I am doing wrong. It takes forever to get to redline! rev's pretty slowly and everyone at the dyno shop said it was from running way too rich and almost bogging the motor down from too much gas.

Any help is much appriciated!

I've been having ignition issues and when I strapped my car up to the dyno and started doing some wideband tuning, I noticed AFRs that seemed WAY wrong. It turned out my plugs were the wrong heat range and basically I was only getting partial ignition, so the wideband told me one thing, but the color of the O2 sensor and the behavior of the car told another story. So that's one of the many possibilities.

easiest solution.................... get a bigger turbo and make use of all that fuel ;)

Hmm.. Thanks for the idea, I guess I need to figure out if my coils are in range. I broke down and bought directly from mazda for a full tuneup. Wires and all. Hopeing that it wouldnt bite me later.

But I also havent checked the coils... there is a way to check them in the FSM I take it?

Haha yeah thats the first thing that poped into my mind was either that or a boost controller and just up it a 1-2psi and see where the AFR stands. I was just trying to make the car run perfect before I went crazy with it. (This is the last step.. seems to rev damn slow, my friends na defiantely revs faster..)

But the Turbo/Boost controller is definately on my mind.

Well I checked this morning with a timing light, all seem to be firing normally. However this doesnt check if its firing up top correctly where it counts.. so I need to find the page in the FSM to test the ignitors and /coils... unless anyone has any other ideas for me to try.

Elfking what sheat range spark plug you using?. i have a s4 engine ported, upgraded turbo, gsl-se inj , profec-b and i use the NGK B10EV works great. perfect heat range for me. the racing beat manual has a turbo section which tell you what range plug to use.
.this website has some information on the S-afc which might be able to help you .

this page also has some good info

That is some great info, thanks for posting it. I have no idea what range plug I am using. I just got the stock OEM ones from Mazda and put them in. Im not sure if I needed to do something else, or get different plugs.

As I said it was just weird that the more I took fuel out it seemed to make little to no difference in EGT's and only a very small difference in the wideband/AFR info coming from it...

I will take a look and double check what plugs I have in there. Thanks for the info, I will definately be looking into this more this weekend.

spark plugs

by the way if you need to purchase those B10EV spark plugs they are easy to get at any motorcycle shop. should be like 6-8 bucks each .

gsracer 11-17-04 04:09 PM

A stock s4 t2 runs rediculously rich, especially up top. A dyno of a stock s4 t2 will show the car actually pegging out the wideband at 10:1
