On the SAFC.. What is Afl?

The SAFC has absolutely no idea what your AFR is. There's no way an engine would run at 4:1 or 50:1.

This question can be answered by a simple search, or by looking at your SAFC manual.

I guess I forgot to mention I bought the car with the SAFC on it and I received no documentation. Also, A'Pexi's website offers very poor downloadable pdf manuals that gives little to no explanation of anything.

To restate the question so next time I don't get a sarcastic answer that also denotes my age in comparison to the majority of the members on the forums, or directing me to search a dead forum / google results that do not pertain to the type of car:

Afl is air flow usage %. The question is: What exactly is that?
Thanks to the above reply, I know it is not a different acronym for afr, but that only rules out one possible thing.

Is it how far the flap on the afm is being pushed?

Afl is the Airflow thru the AFM.

So it is a measurement of where the flap is in comparison to being completely closed (or perhaps I should say "at rest")?

Yes, hence why they make you cut the afm wire to attach the safc to read everything.

The way the SAFC tells you the percentage of opening of the AFM is a little weird. On a few cars, like mine, if you move the AFM flap all the way open, the SAFC only reads about 60% if I remember correctly. Others have had it only go to 50% when manually opening the flap, others have had it higher.

There is no "self learning" for the AFL on the SAFC like there is for the throttle sensor. My guess is that the SAFC expects a lower voltage from the AFM then when all the way open, then there really is. If your wondering why I say lower voltage, its because the ECU puts out 4.50-5.00v to the AFM, TPS, Boost/Pressure Sensor and I think a couple other ones as well. The AFM starts at around 3.8v I believe and then works its way down to less than 1 volt. I will have to double check this today.

Well, you can't really. Its for monitoring only. The only "monitoring" on the SAFC that you could use to do a rough tune with is hooking up the blue wire form the SAFC to the narrow range O2 sensor. I believe the Mazda Traning Manual tells you what voltage is rich and what voltage is lean. If not there are diagrams on the net to tell you this. I think the range goes from 13.5 - 15 AFR. I would do a search to confirm that though.

No. Apexi has you cut the AFM wire because the SAFC modifies the AFM signal (voltage) from the AFM to the ECU. This is how the SAFC can control fuel.
