Questions Regarding Apexi S-AFC
 

Hey everyone,

I have a few questions about the Apexi SAFC. Firstly, I know I'm running rich, I just changed spark plugs and the old ones were black, plus, the car often smokes on startup and the smell of fuel is quite obvious.

I would like to know if an SAFC would be a good investment. I need to lean my engine out and get a bit better gas mileage for my daily driver.

So here are my questions:

Which unit should I go with? The SAFC (either the blue face one or the black one with analog dials) or the SAFC II?

Do I need / can I find a reasonably priced harness for my ECU.

Where should I put it? (I hear the ashtray is quite nice.)

Harness: I don't beleive you can buy one, check out http://www.1300cc.com and how too install it.

Ashtray is fine.

Go with the SAFC II, it's alot more user friendly IMHO.

I found a harness for the SAFC at Rotary Performance: http://www.rx-7.com but it's $150 and that's too much for me right now.

Also, won't I need a wideband O2 sensor to tune it once it's installed?

yes, you do need a wideband to tune your safc, i really don't know much about na's rx7's but i think you should run your AFR to 13.0.

I thought perfect AFR stayed the same in every engine: 14.7 ... ?

I own the safc-2 and i could not imagine ever being without it for my T2. NOw keep in mind that t2's run alor richer than na's but still running rich will lead to carbon build up alot sooner than runnng a little leaner.

I mounted mine in the center console wher the mirror switches go and it looks good. I would say that the biggest reward to grtting a safc is that yoy can lean it out at lower rpm's and adjust a little higher for the upper ones.

Rotarys are rich runnng motors but only need to be at higher rpm's. Not to mention that i no longer get like 5 mpg while daily driving. All in all its a wise chioce to invest in one. But do get a wideband to properly tune it. You'll never get the full funcionality of it without it.

14.7:1 is stoich. That is the point at which every bit of fuel is burned. When you are cruising around this isnt necessarily a bad place to be, but at WOT you want to leave yourself some room for error by not leaning the engine out that much. In fact you likely wont find any power between the low 13's to 14.7, just the chance for trouble.

Crap, I need to get a harness for it too? That sucks. I just picked up an S-AFCII off eBay. Where can I get me a wideband too? My car's running what I like to call "stupid-rich" so I wanna get it taken care of.

ok i just picked up a safc II and i need a few questions answered. 1 i already saw in the post above about how to install it but i dont want to cut the wires considering it already has the connections..(does this plug into the ecu??) 2 what AFR is recommended for daily driving and some aggressive driving?
