Hyundai Genesis Coupe Project
3 Attachment(s)
As some of you may already know, we have started a new project here at A-Spec Tuning. It is the widely talked about 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe. Now obviously it's not a rotary, but we figured this might interest more than just a few of you. We obtained our Genesis Coupe in early-mid March and immediately began tearing into it. With there being such an interest in this vehicle, and it being so 'tuner friendly', we decided to start a little bigger than most.
It will soon be common knowledge, as with any vehicle, that the factory turbo supports "X" horsepower, the factory intercooler is good to "Y" horsepower, etc. Although we are currently developing the basic staged upgrades, we have moved on to the big stuff like a complete fuel system, turbo kit to accept up to a GT35R sized turbo, and intercooler kit, all of which have already been completed. We are also working in conjunction with a very reputable company to hopefully have a stand-alone ECU available in the near future. More details to follow, and I will be posting some dyno information shortly. We have dyno'd the car stock, stock + boost controller, and in the very near future will have some numbers showing all of our modifications to date (w/GT3071R). Time to see what this thing will really make ;) Now for the pics (sorry not the greatest, but you get the idea) |
Progress Pics

Below are pictures of the beginning stages. As you can see, the stock manifold can use some improving. While it actually appears to be a decent design, we know the path most people will want to take; tubular manifold + larger turbo. So why not get to the point? :) Also note the clutch/flywheel set-up. It utilizes a dual mass flywheel. This is becoming more and more common these days for various reasons, but can also be a limiting factor when trying to put the horsepower to the ground. Something is already in the works to take care of that situation...

Hyundai Genesis Intercooler upgrade
2 Attachment(s)
Here are some pics of the stock hyundai genesis intercooler vs. our upgraded intercooler. Should be a nice improvement. This is our standard core for those building to a moderate power level. Our race core should be soon to follow once we deem it necessary on our shop car.

Genesis Turbo manifold and Genesis fuel system
5 Attachment(s)
Our Genesis manifold is in its final stages of completion. As you can see, visually it is very unique. It's design was chosen to promote great spool and not interfere with anything surrounding it. It will accommodate anything up to a GT35R sized turbo. Initially, as noted earlier, we are running a GT3071R with a Tial stainless v-banded housing. I will post some more information and better pics shortly. Our goal is to have a quick spooling, 400+ rwhp kit that is easily upgrade-able with a simple turbo swap, for those looking to achieve more. And the v-band manifold/dowpipe connection will make things that much easier.
The Hyundai genesis fuel system includes our aluminum fuel rail similar to what we supply with our Rx-7 kits, 750cc drop-in injectors that can be used with our rail OR the factory rail, Aeromotive fuel pressure regulator and gauge, Walbro fuel pump and install kit, and all the necessary lines/fittings to make install a breeze. We also changed the factory fuel system, which is return-less, to have a return. This should allow us to achieve the power goals we are looking to obtain. |
Hate to say it guys, but you may have the first cool Hyundai EVER.
|
that's pretty neat

I didnt think the bottom end would hold much over 400? And there is not much aftermaket for the bottom end yet as the evo x 4b11 doesn't carry the same internals..
The fab work looks really nice! What did you car dyno stock? I've heard most of them are in the 210whp area.. |

what dyno are you using? haha 16.5 lbs on a fist sized turbo.... some what of a hair dryer?
|
I'm glad to see people embracing the new platform. I'm somewhat excited about it.

Holy shit, you guys are now in the KDM market!!
Looks like you have some cool cars in the shop. ;) |

questions:
obviously nobody's cracked the ECU yet, that will take time. so this car is going to sit until you get a full standalone wired up? Full standalone on an OBD II car is not doable for anyone who has to pass an OBD II check. I am very curious--could you post some pics of the stock Genesis turbo? I see the shorty stock manifold, it looks pretty solid. Is it a standard undivided Mitsubishi style inlet (TD05 maybe)? or does it have the twin scroll design of the Evo turbos (unsure about Evo X)? What are the measurements of the turbine and compressor wheels? |

We should have it back shortly and I will be able to provide you with some answers to your questions. |
excited to see how this turns out. These cars look to be pretty damn solid.

Hey guys sorry for not being on the forum much lately, I am so backed up on welding and kit orders and stuff I haven't paid much attention on here. Here are some cleaner pics I took of the manifold the other day.
|
Any updates?
|
Yes we will have some more information up shortly sorry for the delay.
|
God, that manifold it gorgeous. I always enjoy viewing your shops work.
|
Any updates? Dynos? I am especially curious to see a dyno with just a boost controller to see how it stacks up to the V6 model. If I get one of these, it will be my practical car and I want to keep it relatively stock, but something simple like a boost controller would be fine.
I figure if a boost controller can get it within arms length of the V6 performance wise, may as well save the $$$ and get the turbo. |
this actually got my attention... curious to see where its at
|
I will try and post up some stuff soon, we are in the middle of trying to get caught up on a lot of things. I'll get some pics together along with some sort of dyno sheet and some video clips for you guys.

YOURS?

just curious but what model did you start with in the 4 banger setup? The base model, the premium package or the track one? I dont see brembos so im guessin the premium or base?? Thanks!
|
It is a premium, I saw no need to buy a car with options I would just replace ;)
|
subscribed. this thread is going to produce an amazing monster i am a huge fan of the genesis.. are you going to be lightening it up or leaving it a street car or what?
|
Looks good Sean. We have a Genesis 3.8 at my work right now for a test vehicle, and it's a pretty sharp car. I'm looking forward to seeing what you can do with it.
|
i drove by your shop last week in my fc. I think you were getting into your genesis and i think you driving behind me until i pulled into my friends shop's lot.

cool
looks very nice. As always you guys do great work. Curious, once you get a full standalone, have any plans to make an intake plenum? Also, why not try a EMS like a Haltech or something similar, until a PnP unit is made?
|
I was wondering how the throttle by wire was going to feel about massive amounts of air pumped into it on stock ECU... Also is the ECU run solely on MAP? I don't see a MAF on it?

Would an AIC work for you, that way you're not altering any of the MAP signals, just supplementing fuel independently of the ECU?
Or even better, a meth injection system, that way it helps with some of the concerns about timing and higher boost on stock ECU. |

Unfortunately there are many reasons why a typical standalone will not work with this vehicle. One of the reasons being drive-by-wire. Although there are units out there that will work with DBW, they are not compatible in other directions.
Yes, the ECU runs off of two MAP sensors. Right now our biggest problem is the factory ECU wants to step in and take control, which makes tuning the FIC very difficult. If the ECU sees something it doesn't like, it has the ability to close the throttle regardless of where the gas peddle is. The CEL is on but only because the OEM MAF is still connected to keep the OEM ECU happy and it reads gobs of air going through so ti throws a CEL here and there. Chris |
thats the only Hyundai i would ever buy other than the 4 door sedan
|
I was on the genesis forum, alot of people saying that the internal will not support more than 350rwhp safely. What is the motor setup?
|
Sean built a manifold for me a while back and its still kicking, Excellent work guys
