Rotary tuning specialists in TX?

Anyone know of any rotary tuning specialists in TX? Thanks

fendamonky 05-24-11 10:28 AM

The guys at RP (www.rx7.com) are very knowledgeable and honest folks. I've never met them face to face for business, however I have had nothing but good experiences with them over the phone (this is while ordering stuff from three different countries).

Also Steven Kan (http://www.kantuning.com/) is in Texas and is (or was) regarded as one of the best rotary tuners in the states.

You'll probably have better luck in the south forum.

Thanks really appreciate it. Bit off topic but I notice your location says at a USO near you, lol whats the down low on that? Im a US Army Combat Medic currently deployed in Afghanistan.

fendamonky 05-24-11 10:42 AM

I'm a Navy guy, currently in RC-S.

xIceHoundx 05-24-11 10:50 AM

Im in RC-W doing village stability operations, joint operation us normal guys attached to the spec ops people

Kiku 05-24-11 11:00 AM

Steve is still in the area as far as I know, I had called him a few months back and I think he has a new shop somewhere in Fort Worth (or maybe its the same shop idk I haven't been there yet)

RP in Dallas is where I've done most of my business. The guys that worked there are all really nice people and know a lot about the cars. Never had a complaint so far.

Anyone ever had much experience with MZM out in Austin?

chiefboon 05-24-11 12:36 PM

Not trying to be difficult, but exactly that question too was recently asked in the South forum recently... You'll find a ton of info over there.

xIceHoundx 05-24-11 01:29 PM

Yea I checked up in there already on it too but I figured since I already had a topic going id add in and see if anything unsaid might come up. Ive heard from subi owners who have been tuned by MZM and they said it was legit but ive heard they are over priced by people as well.

kalinakona 05-24-11 01:57 PM

Well, you have to remember, tuning a subi and a rotary are two completely different things. I havent heard much about MZM, but if they don't do much rotary, I wouldn't trust him.

xIceHoundx 05-24-11 02:19 PM

Their website says they do rotary and they do tune a wide variety of different engine management systems to include AEM and HKS, I've heard that rotary is actually where MZM started at, so I figure theres gotta be some members up on here with things to say about the shop.

chiefboon 05-24-11 05:32 PM

My car was built by MZM from previous owner. Had over $10k in bills from the shop. Other than that I don't really have any opinion of the shop -- car was apparently tuned at Rotary Performance. If you are not in Houston, I don't see why you shouldn't just make an appt at Rotary Performance. If you are in Houston, look for Chuck in the south forum (CEWsomething).

Brain Cain at BDC Motorsports does awesome work. He is here on the forums under BDC

jar2 06-07-11 03:00 PM

Definitely rotart performance in Garland(www.rx7.com). They've done all my work and I've never had issues with them, and they're just great people.

xsnipersgox 06-10-11 05:50 AM

Go with steve, it's awesome to be in his shop and he really knows what he is doing.

RedBaronII 06-10-11 08:43 AM

I have owned my RX7 for 12 years now.
You are a lucky man for having 2 choices.
To echo with the most above, you can't go wrong with Chris at Rotary Performance in the Dallas area.
He is super honest, very nice guy and knows the RX7 inside out. He explains you everything to satisfaction.:icon_tup::icon_tup:
They had the fastest street RX7 in the world and Chris was the tuner.
They have a Dyno in house and are reasonably priced.
And then you have Steve Kan in the Ft.Worth area, also lots of experience.:icon_tup:
He is moving last I heard, so don't know the shop status now.
He also travels to tune for a fee, but you need to find a Dyno to rent.

pluto 06-10-11 07:50 PM

Just moved my shop to Lewisville a week ago.... and I have an mustang awd eddy current dyno for 4 yrs. :)

What are you looking at having them do? You could also fly in to visit each shop and talk with them about what you want done before shipping or driving the car. I went to K-State and fly back home (parents live in Salina) regularly to Manhattan.

I don't know how much you are willing to spend but a $300-400 trip might be worth the piece of mind that you are comfortable with the shop you have chosen.

Rotary Performance has worked on my car and I have purchased several parts from them. Their customer service is top notch. I don't know if they want custom jobs though.

Steve has moved to Lewisville which is much closer to Denton, so I am looking forward to making a trip out to meet him and see his setup.

It sucks not having a good rotary shop near by.

Thanks for all the great info guys. Im currently deployed so its a while out until I will be actually needing to get with a shop just looking at my options, and im looking at reenlisting in OCT hopefully to get Fort Sam Houston, TX as my next duty station over in San Antonio, if it isnt open then i'll probably take Fort Hood, TX which is my main reason for looking in the TX area, also being in KS I dont mind taking the drive down to TX once I have a good idea of what im getting into. I redeploy home from afghanistan in Jan and ive got a pretty extensive build planned once I get home about 16k in parts alone as long as I come back with the money im expecting. Heres a parts list of what I was planning to do, biggest thing to note is the aquamist HFS-3 water meth injection system w/ rotary summer and apexi power FC I need a shop that knows how to do this(feel free to make an suggestions on the parts list btw, my goal was reliable daily driven power):

Fuel System:
CJ Motorsports stage 1 fuel system w/ injectors and FPR
Walbro fuel pump

Ignition System:
HKS twin power ignition system w/ harness
NGK plugs with NGK plug wires
battery relocation kit

Cooling System:
Aquamist HFS-3 water/methanol injection system with RX7 summer
RX7Store V-mount intercooler/radiator
Samco hoses

Turbo:
GTR35R GTX series single turbo conversion
Greddy BOV
Greddy Elbow
Tial wastegate

Drivetrain/Clutch:
Act strip/street clutch
short shift kit

Engine Management:
Apexi Power FC w/ commander and datalogic
GM 3 bar map sensor

Instrumentation(I may cut back on some of these not too sure which yet):
AEM boost gauge
AEM AFR wideband gauge
AEM oil temp gauge
AEM oil pressure gauge
AEM fuel pressure
A-pillar dual gauge pod
Tripower dual gauge center pod
Custom center console gauge mounts

Suspension:
Tein super drift coilovers

Brakes:
Hawk HP+ brake pads
Front and rear slotted rotors

Steven is it hard to get a date for tuning i've heard its often hard to get an appointment that your often booked up?

pluto 06-12-11 12:00 PM

I'm always available on weekdays.... just check on my site and create a thread if you want to reserve a date for a tune.

Steve's the MAN. Good luck with your new shop bro!

xIceHoundx 06-13-11 09:12 AM

Steve you ever worked with aquamists water methanol systems?

pluto 06-13-11 12:26 PM

Currently my FD is pretty much stock aside from a few minor modifications but that parts list I posted up in this thread is the parts list I plan on doing, I wanted to use aquamists HFS-6 system but theyve discontinued making it apparently(word I got from them on their forum) so im planning on running an HFS-6v2 with the rotary summer they offer. All of this is still a ways out as I dont get back from deployment until jan and will be doing the build then but im figuring everything out ahead of time
