does waco/mcgregor texas suck
 

I'm interviewing for a job in McGregor, Texas. It appears to be a suburb of Waco. Has anyone lived there or in Waco? Boring? Fun? Shit hole? Any places there that I should avoid? I live in St. Louis, MO right now. Also, what varieties of creepy crawlies will i have to learn to avoid (snakes bugs etc). How prevalent are these things? My exposure to poisonous snakes has been the zoo and 1 cotton mouth that i saw fishing which i poked with my 9' fly rod so it would stay away from me.

I moved here from Missouri many years ago.. almost 25 years.
I do not miss the Missouri winter weather one bit and will never move back.

Waco is not a big city like St. Louis. By Texas standards it is not that far from either Dallas or Austin that you would consider it isolated. As to pests. Snakes are not a big problem in central Texas. West Texas has the rattle snakes that look for heat at night (like the sidewalk in front of your house). Bugs are another story. Nothing that can kill you but they are bigger and meaner in Texas. I still remember the first time I ran across a Texas cockroach (2.5 to 3 inches long) and it and several of its family flew past my head to avoid the roach spray. There are certain areas where scorpions are a problem. Fire ants are the worst. You will quickly learn to look around when you are outside to avoid these little bastards..

You forgot to mention the mosquitos...

i have a feeling alaskan mosquitos>texas mosquitos....those things were like small birds that zipped around your head when i was fishing. I have had a few run ins with fire ants in Thailand.... fuck those things. they hurt. a lot.

Would it be easiest/cheapest to fly into Dallas and drive down? It looks like AA flies down there but they flights were pretty pricey.

Check out flights with southwest airlines. See which route is cheaper STL-->LoveField (About 125 miles to McGregor) or STL-->Austin (about 100 miles to McGregor)

Just my opinion but I think Waco is pretty boring town. The Baylor students tend to be pretty snobby and not a lot of fun. On the opposite end of the spectrum there are large slumy sections of town. It seems to be very divided between the rich and poor with not much middle class. That being said Texas is a great place to live overall if you can take the heat. Dallas/Ft. Worth to the north and Austin to the south are both lots of fun and have tons of activities every day of the week. Definitely check out all the live music in Austin. Good luck in Texas

Waco really has nothing huge to offer besides its proximity to the larger cities (dallas/austin). Went to high school there -- been back exactly once since. McGregor..just a small town suburb. But, if the job is good, should at least be an 'easy' place to live. Summers are brutal though. The rest of the year is great weather-wise though.

Wacko...i mean waco, is about 1.5hrs from dallas. I puts you pretty much in the middle of DFW/Austin
