why are all single turbo set ups have external wastegate?
 

Is there a reason that every single turbo set up has an external wastegate that dumps the boost into the atmosphere? while it is cool, it's obnoxiously loud...I was wondering if there was some sort of purpose to this because it seems like most turbo kits (greddy, hks, apex'i) all come with the wastegate routed to the atmosphere instead of the exhaust. Does anyone know why they don't just have it already welded into the downpipe?

I think cause they are just to cheap !

It is hard to do it, you need a flex or slip joint for maximum long term reliability, plus space is tight as well.

My WG outlet goes into my DP and I have good power from my car with a full street "quiet" exhaust .... I used a slip joint on mine and have never had a problem with pipes cracking etc (3 years "daily driver").

I agree with you, I don't like the shitty noise of the WG to atmosphere !

It is hard to manufacture due to complexity and space restrictions mostly.

Is there a potential for more power, by venting to atmosphere? Maybe due to less backpressure or turbulence in the exhaust, close to the back of the turbo. What if a seperate pipe was run from the WG all the way back to the diff and then joined with the main exhaust?

All the HKS turbo kits such as the To4E, T04R and T51R kai have the wastegate dump pipe routed back to the downpipe. I think HKS is the only company that does that out of all the Japanese companies. Yes, the pipe comes with a flex section too.

i believe w/ the gt35/40 kit you can get it either way. for the same price. i got it vented to atmosphere. dont ask why...i dont know

the gt3540 kit from aspec tuning comes dumped to the atmosphere on the basic kit. for more money, i think you get the rerouted version. correct me if im wrong.

it would be to hard to to make a internal wastegate with enough size that it would release enough pressure.

You are correct, a coated DP with wastegate dump back to it is an extra cost option for the GT35/40 ASpec kit. The option also comes with a polished turbo housing...very nice BLING! :D

BTW: Even with the wastegate dumping back into the DP, you hear when it opens, but it isn't obnoxious, at last not to me. :)

kyle, explain the vacuum tubing you have coming off the IC pipe. send me an email, i have a few questions.

With regards to the vacuum line coming off the IC pipe. I'm using the Blitz SBC-ID Boost controller. The setup I am using (per the directions in the manual) requires the following:

1) Pressure (turbo pressure) from BEFORE throttle body connected to the IN on the solenoid and also to the base (underside of mushroom) of the wastegate

2) Pressure (manifold pressure) from AFTER the throttle body connected to the the boost controller "brains" box mounted inside the car

3) A connection between the OUT of the solenoid and the top of the mushroom of the wastegate (actually the lowest to the ground nipple of the wastegate based on how it gets mounted nearly upsidedown)

You are looking at #1 which Tee's to goto the solenoid and wastegate, yes.
