What are your thoughts on Turbocharger manufacturers?

Hey guys,

This may be a double post, but I went ahead and did a little search and couldn't come up with good hard results on opinions of certain turbocharger manufacturers.

I am looking at Precision turbochargers. It seems like they utalize Garrett housings? I am assuming the CHRA is not? Can someone better help me understand Precision and if they provide quality turbochargers?

I currently bought a GT45 from someone and come to find it wasn't as advertised and it was a chinese turbo...either way I ended up taking three impeller blades out while driving the other day. I found the nut off of the shaft as well...

I would like to purchase a Garrett, but they are very expensive...and wanted to know what is a good bang for the buck but also provides quality and longevity. I am starting to look at the GT42RS. I am unsure what size rear A/R to go with as well...what are your recommendations for a turbo that will be used for road racing and some street driving but mainly nice for highway pulls. I thought the GT42 would be it...I have a ported motor and am running 850/1680 injector combo with apexi.

I would apperciate your thoughts in advance guys!!

oh and if someone is selling an authentic turbocharger please let me know as well!!!

Thanks!!

Precision used to use a lot of garrett parts including the CHRA's they are now moving away from that since Garrett has kinda pulled the plug on them and are now making more of their own product. As far as expense Precision isn't exactly that much cheaper, their billet turbo's are pricey.

Thanks!!

Despite the initial expense, Garrett gives great bang for the buck. When I install a turbo on my FD or a customer's FD, I want something as close to bulletproof as possible. Replacing turbos isn't exactly easy, cheap or fun. Garrett hands down :icon_tup:

Very true!!! I just didn't want to drop 2-2500K on a turbo today thats all....I am just shopping around now and trying to feel out what is a great reliable product. Yes I agree with you on Garrett and OEM's, I work with Caterpillar and well they utalize the honeywell/Garrett turbochargers on all of their diesel and natural gas engines. Hence why I am leaning towards replacing it right the first time and just going with a Garrett!

You could always go with a journal bearing Garrett Gt42 is price if of big concern, they are pretty inexpensive compared to the BB units..

I rebuilt one two months ago with 900,xxx miles on it. It really didn't even need the rebuild....

Garrett 1st choice ,, 2nd Precision,, after that its also rans

Both Garrett and Precision make damn good turbos Garretts are VERY solid turbos and hard to beat. Precision billet turbos are awesome, theyre making big numbers in relation to their size.

The GT45 is a bit big for road racing, but good for highway pulls. I would recommend a GT42 or a billet 71 or 72mm from Precision. What manifold are you running right now?

900,000 miles?

I missed the 'road racing' part..... you're looking at running a drag sized turbo on a road race car, unless I'm missing something. Why not a nice T4 35R?

BWs400 series seems to be the bang for the buck. I however run a gt4094 and love it. But on my other project I will either try a gt42 or a s475..

Borg Warner FTW. Got a SC362 on my street ported FD and at 17psi i made 475rwhp(pump and meth injection) on a mild tune on apexi power fc and supporting mods(alot more to go psi and fuel wise). Ray at PFS said with race gas mid 500's would not me a problem. I have about 8k on it and it spools like a charm and got my down to a 10.63 pass and has made plenty more 10sec passes. May go bigger in the future but for now its enough for me. If you are looking at something like a 35r(little bigger) i would recommend the sc362, if looking for more than 500rwhp i would look into the 400 series. Also got a good warranty and cheap to repair.

Where is a good place to get a complete Borg Warner kit for the fd at.

turbo10th 11-11-09 08:01 PM

Ray at PFS fabbed up my kit while it was there for my rebuild. Might want to email him and see what he can come up with. His email is info@pfsupercars.com

A chief advantage of Garrett (or Garrett-based clones) is the availability of parts--not just to get them rebuilt, but flanges, housings, etc.

I'm using a Garett GT45 and wouldn't have it any other way. Starts spooling @ 3k and is at full boost just past 3.5K, mint to drive, drift, drag. Engine made 550hp on 11.5psi so I'm a happy boy. It's definately a quality turbo and not to expensive all things considered.

i love my holset, 80 bucks to rebuild, last quite a while and you can find them so cheap.

This masterpower t70 I got is nice, not the best manufacturer in the world but it pulls like a sonofabitch :D

I'd love to hear more details on your engine setup. 20B?

^ I was thinking more along the lines of LS1! that's great spool on a large framed turbo.

But yeah, basically everything has their pro's and con's. BW's are great bang for buck, but have large, heavy 1 piece backplates. Garrett's are great quality, but if you throw a seal through the exhaust or otherwise, you're looking at big money to replace them. Precision Billet stuff is nice, but if you get the BB version you're paying through the nose.

I personally chose the Precision 6768 billet in journal bearing, in order to get a smaller-framed turbo with bigger power potential and reasonable spool time. I was also considering BW's, but I would have had to gone with a 72mm or larger to put out the same flow.

Most of the NZ guys are smart enough not to bastardize their cars with those shitty sounding motors :D

Nope. 13B bridgeport. I wouldn't touch a shitty V8 will a 10 ft pole. It is pretty much completely modified. There is a post of mine about the set up. I may upgrade the injectors, dowel the block and run more boost in the future but for now I'm happy. But the 400-450rwkw mark is very tempting...
