WHAT TURBO TO MAKE 900-1000hp on 20b

exactly what the title states. any suggestions??? any people have first hand experience? and lastly..... will an 80mm 1.32 a/r borg warner do it? Thank you,

Chaotic_FC 10-24-08 12:27 PM

that would be my sugestion, mabey even a s475, but that might be pushin' it.

GT4508R, BW480, and GT80 will all do it. The GT4508R has a T4 housing on it. The others are T6.

thanks for the quick responses. Im just wondering if the 80mm that i have now is too small or not. This is the exact same turbo the outlaw nhra class were running on there 2 rotors. i wasnt sure since i have the extra chamber, that it would run out of air much faster and run out of compressor and/or the 1.32 a/r be too small due to the extra chamber. Basically winter is coming and i will be upgrading the fuel system and if the turbo that i have now may be too small for 900rwhp,,, i may as well do the turbo also. thanks again guys

I think your turbo should be capable of 900whp, I don't know about 1000+, might be pushing it.

I have a friend in PR with a 3 rotor RX-8. He has a GT47 and couldn't like it more. He first had a GT42r, changed it to a GTk1000 for about a month or two and then switched to a GT45 before going to the current one, it has laid 1000whp plus to the wheels and at lower boost levels than with the GT45.

Just my 2 cents.

yes, you have enough turbo even for a rotary. you just can't be afraid to crank up the boost.

problem you have is, the next level of readily available turbos are the large frame 88mm's. if you switch to those, a) they'll be laggy, and b) they need a lot of boost to be able to strech their legs anyway. so you might as well throw as much boost as you can at your current turbo.

You'll be fine with your current turbo...

The GT47 is awesome. The GT80 and GT88 from Garrett are the cheaper versions of the same basic turbo. It uses the same compressor wheel out of the GT47 and 94mm turbine wheel and smaller A/R's. They are half the price of the GT47's just about.

How does your buddy like the GT4508R??? A buddy of mine with a Supra just swapped from the Borg Warner S400 with the 80mm comp wheel and 87mm turbine on a T4 foot print to a GT4508R and couldn't believe the difference in spool. Peak power was the same as well, but the GT45 came on smoother and sooner as well.

Looking4you 10-24-08 03:02 PM

I would say the BW. But the GT45 is a sick turbo

Your hoping to have enough hp for 9's lol

How Much boost are you pushing through the 80mm you have now? I didn’t think you maxed out its efficiency. (not like you have a scrawny T04S ;) )

I’m going to be back in the dirty the 9-14th, going to take my FD to Atco on the 11th (weather permitting) if you want me to drive it into the 9's let me know lol Deff going to go see Jim during that week

What boost level you want to make this 1000hp at?
Also what's the setup on the motor, port, compression, fuel type etc.

Picking the compressor to make 1000hp on a rotary is not a big problem. The turbine side is the difficult part. On 3-rotors as power and rpm goes up turbine back pressure becomes a huge issue.
If it's an all out drag setup for a 3-rotor I would look into the GT 47 family.
Even if the BW unit can support that power on a rotary and that depends on exactly which actual company/person that BW unit is from I know for a fact it won't last at the pressure levels required to make that power.
Have you even maxed out the present turbo?

You're correct about the turbo being 80mm but but it's no way the same as the one you're using. That I know for a fact! :)
I agree on your theory about the turbo size in a 2 vs 3 rotor.

lol funny guy, hahaha bitch! ive only had it to 23psi but if i was going to run out before the 900 to 1000 mark, i may as well do it over the winter. thats why i was asking if anyone knew. Its obvious i have enough power to run a 9 now but i need to get my butt to the track more lol hopefully see you in a few weeks

We have several customers running 7s and making more than 900 RWHP on the dyno with a two rotor.
