What ignition setups are you running?

My Aem C2Di recently fried on my sorry ass... It just sits on my bench now, and smells really nasty.

I´m running 4 Crane came LX91 coils, one for each plug. What ignition boxes are you guys running?

I´m thinkin of something by Crane or maybe Jacobys. But it would be really nice to just have ONE box. I dont want one box for each coil.

So hit me....

Ask Mark 57 about the Jacobs. I think he went through two ignitors cause he didnt use Jacob coils..LX91's. Just changed2nd last week. 83Turbo is like a Judge Ito with these systems and has tested many of these systems (he has a the equipment by proffession) and different combos. I cant recall everything he said but highlights were: AEM hates any heat and very resistant sensitive.Jacobs doesnt do the variable spark thing (whatever that means) and that MSD or what they say they are. There are certain coil combos with ignitors that work well others dont even try. After several PM's with 83Turbo I have sold my DIS-4 and bought what I feel like I would like to try. It may be too much ,it may not last.
Two 7AL each with a LX92 for leading and stock trailng. I have two MSD 6 on standby.
He has some post on other forum.

Yep, I'm wired on the lead ignition as P-FC => ignitor => Jacobs FC1000 x 2 => Jacobs FC C4 coils x 2 => Taylor wires => NGK BUR9EQ's. C4 coils mounted to a custom weld-on bracket on side of stock-mount N-Tech Engineering BMK battery box. Plenty of room. So, I'm running "matched" parts. I highly recommend doing it like this. In the past, my Jacobs Rotary Pak box burnt two stock L coils. Then, that box burned up while driving two LX91 coils. Then, I went w/ two FC1000 boxes driving those two LX91s and a coil failed. Bought two new LX91s. Then, a FC1000 box failed. Bought a new FC1000 box and two C4 coils (and a new HKS wastegate diaphragm). Engine is strong and happy now.

I strongly suggest you use CraneCams ignition boxes. Stay w/ matched parts!!! That way the manufacturer is compelled to warranty them out for you should a part fail.

I have learned recently that it is better to go w/ "digital" ignition boxes as they generate the most precise spark signal. Here are some links. Good luck. Mark

I failed to also mention that if you go to www.summitracing.com, they have detailed descriptions of all igniton amp boxes and coils. It turns out that Crane Hi6 is best for your LX91s. http://store.summitracing.com/defaul...h.asp&N=400078

P.S. One box => one coil or you will overwork burn up the box and then have to go out and buy two more boxes to replace the one you burned up. You don't want to make the mistake I made.:)

Thanx... this is getting better and better.

But just to make sure, it´s this one you mean:

Yeah - that looks to be what you need.....times two. You really only need to amp-up the lead coils.

13BNUT 05-06-05 12:33 AM

Is anyone running MSD ignition systems???
How good are they

I have four LX91 coils, so i need four amps...

My stock coils where crap...

mark57 05-06-05 08:03 AM

1 Attachment(s)
It really isn't necessary to that right off the bat. What are your mods?

The only car I've seen do this is the Rotary Performance racecar.......

I was running MSD 6 on front stock coils for three years...no problems.

haltechrx7 05-12-05 03:05 PM

I'm currently using 4 MSD/6A's and 4 blaster coils driving each plug in direct fire driven by a Haltech E6X

I'm thinking of going with the 2 Hi6 Crane packs and 2 PS-91 coils for leading and then stock trailing. Would that be ok or do the trailings HAVE to be upgraded? I'm running a Haltech E6X on a 13B-RE by the way. Thanks in advance.

Howard Coleman 05-12-05 04:01 PM

i have 2 years on the newer model Jacobs Rotary Pro Pak in conjunction w stock fd trailing coils and an fc T2 leading coil.

before i bought the Pro Pak i was aware of them frying various coils so i called Jacobs and talked to a tech guy who explained the problem w the older models and how they had fixed it. the new model is designed just for the rotary. Ari was running the new model on his racecar and suggested the combo. that was good enough for me.

Running 2 MSD DIS-4 HO's http://www.msdignition.com/ignition_25_62111_62151.htm with 4 DIS racing coils http://www.msdignition.com/coil_blaster_2_8230.htm controlled by Microtech LTX12S

Is anyone here running the HKS Twin Power ign. amp.? Or is it not considered robust enough for a single setup?

BoostedRex 05-12-05 04:47 PM

It's robust enough, but why pay that price when you could have something just as good or better for less money? Just my .02 anyway.

Levetsj 05-12-05 04:47 PM

I've been using a Jacobs Rotary Pro Pak with the stock coils on my '91 TII for 5 years... No problems

ErnieT 05-12-05 08:53 PM

I've used three different ignition setups with 3 different turbo setups.
1. stock leading/turboII trailing (single turbo, haltech, stock reman)
2. HKS twin pwr. (stock twins and single turbo) didn't do that much for the $$)
3. Electromotive Tec 3 ingnition (probably one of the best, if not the best) on the
market. (custom race setup, single turbo, custom manifold, etc....)
Everyone will have their own opinions. Unless your running over 20psi, an ignition amp such as the AEM, or HKS is all you'll need.

manatecu 05-12-05 09:33 PM

I have been running my HKS on my single for the past 4 years. Not one problem. It was plug and play. It is very small.

Not cheap but then again what is for an rx7?

BoostedRex 05-13-05 10:44 AM

I'm still curious on if I can use my stock trailing coils from my S4 TII for my RE engine? I'm already planning on running the Crane leading pack and coils. Any and all help/advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

ronbros3 05-14-05 06:31 PM

OK I run 2 Crane DIS2 which have 2 boxs in 1 case, I run 4 Crane LX-92 coils , so far 2yrs works fine no more ignition problems period. drive them all with a MICROTECH LTX8. please run a noise limiter capacitor on your power source. RON

RX-Heven 05-14-05 09:03 PM

2 Jacobs Pro Paks and 2 Jacobs Ultra Coils.
One for each leading.
Haltech E6X with stock leading igniters.

Starting to look into something for the trailing

This is on a custom turbo 2nd gen.

jasrx 05-16-05 02:20 AM

i run standard s4/5 turbo coils with my haltech E6K

Master-Yoda 05-19-05 01:54 PM

Is an Aem ems powerfull enough to trigger Crane Cams ignition amplifier?
