what apex seals should I use
Can all you single turbo people tell me what apex seals that you have tried and worked for High boost.25-30psi range shoul I stay with 2mm and go 2 piece or 1 pieceor 3mm 2 or 1 piece also what about ceramic? thanks

Now for the exotic stuff...... Ceramics are good and very strong and do tolerate more detonation than factory and have very low ware rates.Drawbacks are very high cost and they do break eventually and most of the time do more damage than the factory steel ones.They must also be fitted/clearanced properly to be effective and live long. I havn't tried any of the Hurley or other type seals that are similar in design. This is just based on my experienced and others may differ. BTW. Gordon, I have a couple questions about the hurley seals. Do you have to do any kind of modifications to fit the 2mm seals or will they fit fine? Is there any loss of compression below 4000rpms? I know that double springs will keep the seals from floating at high rpms, are their any other advantages with double springs? I also noticed on their website that they appear to be one piece, is that true as well? Sorry for all the apex seal questions lately, I'll know everything about them when this is all over. Thanks again.

I also ran the factory 3mm seals in the past and my only problems was the single spring collapsing under high boost/heat. I also had them warp on me once or twice. Other then that they held up pretty goog.
I've been using the 3mm Hurleys for awhile now and they see 18-20psi on pump gas in the street and 23-24psi at the track with race gas on 9.4:1 compression rotors and they hold up very well. But, I've also had them break..... and they seem to break in the tip of the main seal where it meets the corner most of the time. The nice thing about the Hurleys is that they barely cause any damage to rotors or housings. Crispped: are you running double springs with the 3mm oem seals ??? Back then i machined the oem 3mm seals for double springs and the motor sealed better...mainly at high rpm. later, John D. |

Double spring seals will not stop detonation. They will only give better sealing under high boost and may also stop spring sag after alot of use.
I am using some kind of composite seal that are/were made by a company in Canada. Anyone know which company it might be? I used to have double spring seals but with my latest engine they are single spring. I get about 17 inches of vacuum at idle (1100rpm). |
whats all this talk of double spring apex seals? the stock ones i pulled outta my spare motor had 2 springs on them..............

as i said, my stock engine had two springs per seal in it, how is this different to the hurley ones? i have been to their page band the springs look the same as th factory ones. whats the jist?

I think you guys are confusing the OEM 2mm apex seals that use 2 piece springs with the OEM 3mm that only use one spring.
