Wastegate question
Okay, I posted this in the 3rd gen section, but I am thinking this may be a better place to look for an answer.
First to make sure I understand. The wastegate is controlled by how many turns the internal spring has, and height of the spring. I.E. if I have a shorter spring with less turns, it should open up the wastegate at a lower psi correct? Next, what I want to do: I opened up my blitz wastegate, and it appears to have a spring that is very similar to the HKS one. Can I interchange the 2 springs? Size wise the girth looks about the same on both springs. What do you think? |
Everything is determined by spring rate.
Sprint rate is defined by: spring wire thickness spring diameter spring length And, spring metal material It might look similar, but due to material it might actually be different. You can try it out and see what kind of boost level you attain. If shouldn't be that much different. -Ted |

knowing nothing about wastegates and how they work, I assumed one design would be quite different from another. So, I bought the HKS wastegate thinking it would be easier to switch flanges and or create adapters to make the HKS WG work where the Blitz WG once was. However after pulling the Blitz wastegate it looks like the easier path would be to just exchange the springs. Live and Learn I guess. I let everyone know how it turns out. |
Almost all wastegates are "poppet" valve designs, with the exception of the new Turbonetics "swing valve" WG.

Well I got out and tested her this morning, very little movement. My boost only went down, about 1/2 a pound with the new spring.
Oh well, back to the drawing board. |
