Wastegate Leak Problem
 

Hello all, I recently bought an FD and I will come right out and say I'm not very car savvy. I think there is something wrong with my wastegate because at Idle it is releasing exhaust through the pipe that is directly connected to it as if the wastegate isn't closing. This is making a horrendous exhaust leak sound and I need to fix this, barely any air is even making out of my exhaust and I would like to hear my muffler instead of an exhaust leak noise. I don't know what kind of wastegate it is either, sorry. I will put some pictures up so you can take a look, maybe something to do with the nipples? If you know what I should do and you know of a site with instructions please post it, I need step by step instructions to be able to understand what to do. Thanks for any help.

sounds like you've got a bad case of external wastegate.... tehehe

you can get that dump pipe re-routed into your muffled exhaust or live with it...

Well, it still shouldn't be open when the car is idleing should it? I think it is a Greddy Type C 47mm external wastegate. Wouldn't the wastegate work correctly if vaccum hosing was attached to the nipples and then routed to someplace that I would have no idea because I don't have a manual? In other words, anyone know where the hosing should attach to from the nipples?

a wastegate vents exhaust gas that would otherwise be used to spin your turbine and in turn, make boost. what you are experiencing at idle is normal.

as far as missing hoses, you need to fix that before you go driving... i'll let someone with some more single turbo experience tell you the best way to do that.

Looks to me like the adjustment screw is out too far taking the spring pressure of the wastegate? I dont have an adjustable style like this but, i do know the nipple on the side of top cap or head should pipe to the intake or turbo pressure side. You need a boost controler or atleast know the spring pressure! Mabye someone can give better advice.

Do you have a boost controler (BC)? The BC vac. hose should attach to the upper nipple, the one closer to the wastegate exhaust pipe.
If you have a simple manual BC, all you need is one vac. hose that will attach the upper nipple to the IC pipe (right after the turbo) with a MBC in between, and according to the pressure in IC pipe and adjustment in MBC the wastegate should open accordingly.

If you have a good electronic BC, which I would highly recomend with single turbo apps, you'd need to use both nipples on the wastegate, the lower nipple would hold the wastegate closed when you are boosting high untill your desired pressure reaches to open the wastegate from the upper nipple.

Now, If you don't have any BC. A properly working wastegate should hold boost to approximately 7-8 PSI ~ of its spring, you mentioned that it's leaking even on iddle, my thoughts are that your wastegate is bad, alowing some gasses to pass through it is not a good thing, which does not mean you cannot boost at all, but it will make the turbo work allot harder in order to create the desired pressure.
BTW, there were some wastegates sold on ebay that looked like the Greddy ones that failed (couldn't resist the heat) after a while and had similar problems.

To test it the good'ol way, I would lift the car enough to get under there and try messing with the adjuster bolt to see if it's adjusted on the soft side, as Busted7 mentioned above, blow through the wastegate exhaust pipe to see if that's the case, if air constantly goes by with ease, you need a new wastegate.

1st put pressure on the spring by the moving the nut up.With a hose connected to it (side nipple and to the turbo outlet area you can throttle on slowly to watch for boost.You are looking to see where to set the base rate of the spring.It should not leak at all during idle or take off. No good? Next Pull it off.See if it is seating correctly. Also check the valveshaft for scratches, bent or carbon lockup.
