Waste gate canisters bw 8374
I was just wondering what waste gate canisters everybody was using on the 8374. From factory it comes with the medium boost canister

Depends on a lot of factors, but the two biggest ones are;
Target Boost Pressure Exhaust system size |
turbosmart <3
it has replaceable springs to make it whatever you want. |

If that was a common problem, why have we not heard more about it?
Mine seems well made, but I haven't run it yet. |

Well it is the one I saw was defective, however that seems unlikely as the selling shop had seen the issue iirc. Perhaps TS changed the design. More likely, most people don't check for issues like that until a larger performance issue surfaces. Well made does not equal well designed. It is still somewhat functional even with the boost leak - external gates have some air leakage between the valve guide and valve stem for cooling/expansion purposes after all. However the IWG75 doesn't have those requirements and in this case the leak was easily fixed...

I'd just start out with the medium canister it comes with, and use a good electronic boost controller. I didn't see a big difference between the low and medium canisters. The low cracked a little sooner, but the eventual full boost was the same.
The way mine is mounted, it would be pretty difficult to disassemble and install a new spring while it's on the car, so if you're removing it anyway, might as well just use a BW unit... they are cheap. |

I've only worked with one, but that WG canister is a pile of garbage just like everything else Turbosmart I've ever used. Bottom chamber leaks past the shaft once the arm starts to extend. Customer went back to the shop that supplied it and gave him a washer and o-ring to put between the canister and mounting plate, a solution they had apparently worked out on the other leaking canisters they had installed.

if the turbosmart actuator did leak, it would be on the bottom part of the actuator... which the BW doesn't even have.
the bottom port is to hold the gate closed so the boost ramps up faster. if you just get a single port turbosmart it won't leak at all. |

Intresting topic, I have the same dual port actuator and i notce that if i boosted multiple times my boost starting to decrease. I have it setup with a Greddy EBC using a 4 port mac valve. after reading this post i thinking of putting back the original BW actuator.

I use the medium actuator in most cases. I have been able to hold as low as 8lbs of boost with it and a correctly designed turbo system.
